2016 Daniel Fields triples as a complete sentence, a complete self-description and the name of a center fielder who led the International League in walks, then bounced from Detroit to Milwaukee to Los Angeles on waivers.
2015 A quality season could have ascended Daniel Fields, a defensively sound center fielder, to the big leagues, but he missed several weeks with a broken hand and then there's that whole "hitting the ball" skill.
2014 Prior to 2013, Fields fit the profile of the rawly talented players who crowd the downballot portion of team prospect lists. Last year he finally put those skills toward production, as he matched or set career highs in nearly every category, and even every type of category: power, speed, rate stats; singles, doubles, triples, homers. He still needs to make more contact, or he'll see pitchers cut fastballs from his diet entirely. But even in that gloomy scenario, his defense and speed enhance his overall value and give him a legitimate fourth-outfielder future.
2013 Tools and youth remain firmly on Fields’s side. The 22-year-old rebounded enough from a dismal 2011 campaign that he ended up getting promoted to Double-A, where he acquitted himself well in a short spell. Strikeouts have been an issue throughout Fields's pro career, but he took a major step forward last year, cutting his rate down to 20 percent after back-to-back seasons at 27. With time still on his side and tools hanging out of every pocket, Fields is still viewed by the organization as a prospect, but it is time for him to start turning the dreams into reality. The team has been aggressive with him throughout, but he should spend all of 2013 in Double-A, barring a major breakout.
2012 Toolsy center fielder Daniel Fields regressed during his second spin through High-A; he was still young for the league, but if he continues to strike out in a quarter of his plate appearances he won’t have a future.
2011 The numbers above might not look very sexy, but context is like lingerie: a little goes a long way. Few high-school draftees starting their first professional season have faced as big a challenge as Fields; he was asked to change position from shortstop to center and take on an assignment to High-A. A raw athlete, Fields has a lot to learn but impressed the organization with his arm, greyhound speed, and power potential. At the plate, Fields struck out in almost a third of his plate appearances, but surprisingly drew enough walks to keep his OBP afloat. He’ll need to take better advantage of his speed in the field and on the basepaths, and cutting down on strikeouts will be atop the priorities list, but for a teenager in the Florida State League, this was an impressive year.
