2018 Due to publishing agreements, the 2018 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2018 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2017 Lisalverto Bonilla returned from Tommy John surgery to pitch well. That puts him a long talk with Ray Searage away from becoming a 20-game winner.
2016 Lisalverto Bonilla had surprising success in a starting role toward the end of 2014, but Tommy John surgery in April derailed any momentum the medium-sized righty might have built up.
2015 Yet another relief prospect who the Rangers wedged into the rotation in a pinch, Bonilla started more major-league games in 2014 than minor-league games in 2012-2013. Because baseball remains baseball, he won each of his three September starts, allowing just four earned runs total. His profile does not support a rotation projection in the long run, though, as below-average control and the lack of a quality breaking pitch are limiting factors. The Rangers sent Bonilla to the AFL to continue working as a starter, so he might get a chance to compete for the no. 5 spot this spring.
2014 Armed with a low-mid-90s fastball and knockout changeup, righty reliever Lisalverto Bonilla posted a disastrous 7.95 ERA in 43 Triple-A innings before surrendering just one run in 30 Double-A frames.
2013 Acquired from Philadelphia as part of the Michael Young deal, Bonilla is a talented righty with a fastball that reaches 95 mph. He’ll also mix in a quality changeup and a work-in-progress slider. Following a full-time transition to the bullpen with the Phillies in 2012, the Dominican is expected to remain in that role with Texas. A thumb injury, which required surgery, sidelined Bonilla for the second half of last season, but he returned for the Phillies’ instructional league and pitched in winter ball. The 23-year-old is still on the raw side but has seventh- or eighth-inning relief potential. He should open 2013 in the upper minors with a chance at Arlington if he improves his command and breaking ball.
