DateQuestionAnswer
2020-04-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Craig, thanks for the chat. Which good young players are playing exactly how you would have projected, and who are some guys you missed on?
(Barkeep from South Scottsdale)
Man it's harder for me to remember the good ones? I was ALL about Arismendy Alcantara. I don't know if you're done with Lewis Brinson but I thought he was a star, too. (Craig Goldstein)
2016-03-14 14:30:00 (link to chat)Arismendy Alcantara: still a potential impact player after last year's horrendous season? If so, what does he need to work on (besides not striking out so much)?
(portocac from Chicago)
I don't see it. More of a reserve type for me. (Brendan Gawlowski)
2015-09-30 19:00:00 (link to chat)Do you expect any of these guys to bounceback in 2016?: Arismendy Alcantara D.J. Peterson Alen Hanson Alex Jackson David Dahl Tyler Kolek Braden Shipley Reynaldo Lopez Sorry for the huge question, thanks!!!
(Max from Connecticut)
I would put my faith in Reynaldo Lopez and David Dahl. Arismendy Alcantara's approach hasn't matured from where it was last year so I'm not expecting him to bounce back. Alex Jackson looked lost at the MWL, he still has talent but that might take some time for him to figure it out. I've heard awful things on Tyler Kolek, high exertion with a terrible body and nary a dependable secondary pitch.

Braden Shipley hurts me. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat)Which Cub at AAA do you think is most likely to make an impact down the stretch?
(Blars82 from WI)
Javier Baez is the guy who if he's healthy will manage to come up and make the biggest impact. The question is whether or not he can manage to adapt to playing all over the diamond the way that Arismendy Alcantara did not. It sounds great on paper but is a rough role for a young kid to fill. (Mike Gianella)
2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat)I have a bunch of fringy MI in a 20 team dynasty league. But because it's a 20 teamer, they all have some value. If you have to cut one of Brad Miller, Eugenio Suarez, Arismendy Alcantara, Jed Lowrie, or Cesar Hernandez, which 1 of them would you get rid of? How would you rank those guys in a dynasty league going forward?
(Thomas from Wrigleyville)
I'd cut Hernandez, although if you're counting on stats for this year, that's kind of tough. The long term ranking for me is Alcantara, Miller, Lowrie, Suarez, and Hernandez. (Mike Gianella)
2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat)With reports floating around that the Cubs have inquired on David Price, is there any way a deal could get done without including anyone from the big league roster? Torres / McKinney enough to headline a deal?
(cowboy2024 from Chicago)
I think it's possible, although I think it would take more than those two to be the headliners. A lot depends on what the Tigers scouts think of those guys as well as Albert Almora (whose stock has dropped but I still like) and C.J. Edwards. If you're counting Javier Baez or Arismendy Alcantara as minor leaguers despite their lack of rookie eligibility, my magic 8-ball says yes. (Mike Gianella)
2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat)Who has a better major league career Albert Almora or Arismendy Alcantara?
(BNer Chip from Wrigleyville)
Almora. (Mike Gianella)
2015-07-28 18:00:00 (link to chat)Is Arismendy Alcantara a quad-A bat at this point?
(Phil from CT)
I think he's a trade chip at this point. I think the Cubs' jam of offensive talent melded with his lack of production and I can't really see him on the roster in any meaningful way in the long run. In terms of talent I still see a solid utility player but that's about it. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-06-02 18:00:00 (link to chat)Who would you rather have on your dynasty team, Arismendy Alcantara or Orlando Arcia? What about Alen Hanson?
(Alex from Baton Rouge)
Fantasy only? Alcantara then Hanson then Arcia. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-04-16 17:00:00 (link to chat)Is Arismendy Alcantara worth holding onto in a deep keeper? That multi-positional is so sexy expect he hasn't yet gotten the memo to be the Latin Zobrist at the plate.
(Jonas from Chico)
Yes. I still like him a lot, and the power/speed combo is worth your time. He'll eventually hit, even if the BA is never great. (Mike Gianella)
2015-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Everyone seems to be down on Arismendy Alcantara, where do you stand with regards to his future outlook? Thanks.
(oxpaulo from WV)
This is rapidly emerging as a theme of the chat, but: people are too quick to dismiss good young players when they don't perform immediately. Alcantara is projected by PECOTA for half a WARP in half a season's worth of at-bats, and I think that's about right. I think he's got a shot at being an average-ish player in the long term (i.e. two or three years from now), despite his sub-replacement level initial campaign. (Rob Arthur)
2015-02-04 19:00:00 (link to chat)Arismendy Alcantara - what will his role be in this upcoming Cubs prospect-laden lineup? What would be a projected statline?
(Ron from texarkana)
Someone will either get hurt or be bad, and he'll play a significant role, mostly at 2B and some in the OF, probably a bit of CF. 260/320/420 or so is where I'd peg the slash. (Jordan Gorosh)
2015-01-05 15:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Jeff, could you rank Michael A. Taylor (WASH), Kennys Vargas, Jon Singleton, Danny Santana and Arismendy Alcantara for future career? Are they all crap-shoots at this point?
(ColeWhittier from Chico, CA)
Every one of those guys is a flawed player in some way, but I'll take Vargas. In this power-hungry era, I'll take the guy who has already shown an ability to hit for power at the big league level. Close second would be Arismendy, because I love the defense/athleticism/versatility and think he'll ultimately hit. (Jeff Moore)
2015-01-28 19:00:00 (link to chat)Arismendy Alcantara future 20-20 all star?
(kylanje from FLA)
I want to say yes but I can also imagine a future where he consistently alternates between 15-30 and 20-15. He's very talented and he will be utilized all over the field in 2015. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-11-04 18:00:00 (link to chat)What is a realistic role for Albert Almora? Does he have the upside to supplant Arismendy Alcantara (all things considered)?
(Jay from S IN)
Almora could be a Role 6 player at his peak. the Defensive profile is going to be impressive in the middle of the diamond, and while the offensive approach is aggressive, I think he has the chops to hit and hit for some good gap power long term. I think he'll be a better player overall than Alcantara. (Mark Anderson)
2014-10-03 11:00:00 (link to chat)Will you root for Addison Russell to become a star because he and you used to be tight, or will you root for him to fail so you feel better about the trade? I'll assume you said the second and go ahead and call you a monster and a illogical psychopath.
(Paul from Ohio)
I actually feel relatively indifferent toward Addison Russell now. I'll root for a lot of players who get traded from the A's on the basic ground of familiarity, but I never really formed an emotional bond with Russell. It didn't take very long for me to start thinking of him as yet another Cubs prospect, and I, outside of general feelings of empathetic sadness when players are themselves sad, don't really care whether Javier Baez and Arismendy Alcantara and Kris Bryant succeed or fail. In my heart, Russell joined that group pretty quickly. (Jason Wojciechowski)
2014-09-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who has a better chance of playing CF for the Cubs in the future, Albert Almora or Arismendy Alcantara?
(DR70095 from NC)
Wrong chat, sorry. (Joshua Kusnick)
2014-07-31 19:30:00 (link to chat)I have two for you Ben... 1) just now far has Rafael Montero buried himself in the Mets organization? Has deGrom's emergence almost sealed his fate? 2) Now that the Cubs have acquired Addison Russell, is either he, Javier Baez, or Kris Bryant trade bait? Is there a way for all three, as well as Arismendy Alcantara to remain in the Cubs future lineup? Thanks, and it's awesome to see your continued success in the field you love. Congrats
(Andy Singleton (@PeoplezPen) from Brooklyn, NY)
Montero certainly isn't done, no. He has higher upside than deGrom in the long run, and injury/attrition always present opportunities for pitchers. Bryant at 3B, Russell at SS, Baez at 2B and Alcantara in CF with Castro the odd man out is one way to get that done. Could also move Castro to 3B and put Bryant in LF and keep them all. Thanks for the kind words! (Ben Carsley)
2014-07-24 19:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think that Javier Baez spending time at 2B in AAA is a sign that a call-up could be coming soon? Arismendy Alcantara is playing pretty well- would he move to the OF to make room?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
I think it can happen in September which is a really far cry from where he was early in the year. I think Alcántara moves to CF for Baez. He can handle it. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)What's the material difference between Arismendy Alcantara and Dilson Herrera? Their profiles and body types seem similar. Their production is reasonably similar. Alcantara seems to have a bit more pop, but Herrera is 2 1/2 years younger and playing only 1 level lower.
(billshiers from New York)
I think Alcantara has more skills (tool utility) and a better profile and versatility on defense. (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)Arismendy Alcantara - What could we be looking at here. A .280/.320/.430 guy with 15/15 potential?
(Brian from MI)
Maybe a little more slug, but that's in the ballpark of what I was thinking. He's got surprising power due in large part to his big boy wrists. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)Besides Joey Gallo, who has made the biggest leap forward.
(scott from az)
Raimel Tapia, Tim Anderson and Arismendy Alcantara who is becoming the star of this chat. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)After his recent hot streak, can we start to say Arismendy Alcantara has proven himself ready for a callup? What kind of OBP do you think we can expect ROS?
(LoyalRoyal from Poolside)
In a vacuum, I'd like to see Alcantara spend the entire year at Triple-A. He's only 22 and his plate discipline was getting exposed early in Triple-A. He's never going to be a huge on-base guy, but you can't mistake the power production at second base. Plus, Darwin Barney is so terrible that it's going to be an upgrade no matter what. I'd see a .270/.320/.450 kind of guy, which is a nice offensive piece at second base. (Jeff Moore)
2014-06-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Fantasy-wise, who do you like more: Mookie Betts or Arismendy Alcantara?
(childgrambino from Richmond, VA)
I'll take Alcantara, but I don't feel great about it. I think both have 20-steal potential, but I think Alcantara will hit for more power and is a better bet to play middle infield, which ups his fantasy value to me. Mookie Betts is obviously no joke, though. Can flat-out hit the baseball and has a great idea of what he's doing at the plate. (J.P. Breen)
2014-04-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)RJ, the Southsiders have Micah Johnson and Northsiders have Arismendy Alcantara. Any thoughts on ETA and expected production/ceiling?
(Chi-Town Keystones from Sweet Home Chicago)
Both could be up this year. Alcantara is the better prospect, as he's got the chance to be a legit first-division starter. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-04-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think Arismendy Alcantara's potential is?
(Sam from Albany)
Everyday regular. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-05-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)I have the #1 waiver claim in my dynasty league. Waiting for a decent prospect to get the call. Of these 3 which would you use it on. Mookie Betts, Arismendy Alcantara or Garin Cecchini?
(Ned F. from Springfield)
Alcantara (Harry Pavlidis)
2014-04-09 19:00:00 (link to chat)How do you view Arismendy Alcantara in the long term as a fantasy prospect?
(Jake from Florida)
I have him on the same level as Rougned Odor. I sway on who I rank higher depending on the day (and league size). To me he's a do everything well guy with some risk. I think he can be a 20-20 guy. I'm really high on him. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-04-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)We know about the on-field tools, but where does Byron Buxton rank on the alliteration scale? Is it an 80? Or is he behind a guy like Arismendy Alcantara or someone else?
(Joe from St. Louis)
Buxton is up there, but Alcantara sets the bar. That's some serious name flash right there. (Jeff Moore)
2014-04-03 19:30:00 (link to chat)Rougned Odor or Arismendy Alcantara?
(MRubio52 from Chicago)
I still believe in Arismendy (Craig Goldstein)
2014-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you have any favorite sleepers in the Cubs system? Also, do you think Mike Olt can resurrect his career?
(Duff Man from Shelbyville)
I'm excited about Olt. My friend Sahadev Sharma did some great reporting on Olt's vision issues, and, no pun intended, things have cleared up.
As far as sleepers, it's hard for me to say who would appear to be a sleeper ... Christian Villanueva? Arismendy Alcantara? The aforementioned Olt? If so, those guys. (Harry Pavlidis)
2014-02-26 19:00:00 (link to chat)Dynasty League looking for a second baseman for the future. Who do you like more, Mookie Betts or Rougned Odor? Or is there someone else you think could be more promising?
(Justin from STL)
I like Odor better, Arismendy Alcantara is right there with him too. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-02-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)2B seems like a pretty shallow position fantasy-wise. Any chance rostering Javier Baez in hopes the Cubs bring him up to replace Barney in 2014 pays off?
(RatedRookie from Atlanta)
There's a non-zero chance, but it's very slim. Arismendy Alcantara might have the better shot at that. (Ronit Shah)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)Who has the most absurd/epic name in the minors?
(John Niggli from Lagos)
I like Arismendy Alcantara has the best name in the minors. Distinctive, alliterative, flashy. One-eyed dapper big cat Holly Holl has informed the world that there's an upcoming draft-eligible player named Handsome Monica, though. (Ben Carsley)
2014-01-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)What are the chances that any of these players will make the major league team out of spring training: Miguel Sano,Arismendy Alcantara, Franicsco Lindor, Alex Meyer, Noah Syndergaard
(temple from madison)
I wouldn't be surprised if Sano got a decent amount of playing time with the Twins this season but I wouldn't expect he'd make the team out of ST for, if nothing else, service time reasons. The Cubs already have Castro at short so there's no reason to bring up Alcantara, same with Lindor and the Indians. I'd be surprised if any of them made the majors out of ST, but crazier things have happened for sure. (Matthew Kory)
2014-01-17 10:00:00 (link to chat)Will Arismendy Alcantara crack your top 101? Is the power he showed last year real or more a product of the league he played in?
(steve g from CA)
Alcantara was ranked 83 on the BP 101 ( I think). I don't think he's going to be a big power bat at the major league level, but you can't sleep on his pop. Getting to watch his BP behind the cage really turned me on to his raw pop; quick path to the ball but excellent extension through it, which created loud contact. I was impressed with the player. It's been said before, but he really does remind me (and others) of Jose Reyes-light. (Jason Parks)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)I hear you have a thing for Arismendy Alcantara. Tell me why. Now tell me what he can do for my fantasy team. Tell me.
(Ben Skole from Your heart)
I do indeed. I think he can be a .275/.340/.450 type hitter, at least early on, with some solid speed. What excites me most is his improvements in production WHILE moving up the chain. I like that he makes adjustments. I'm not sure if that projection is aggressive or conservative, but I don't like to put anything past a guy who can make adjustments like that. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Your biggest under-the-radar prospect that could sneak into Top 50 status by year-end 2014 is _______?
(Ben from New York)
Arismendy Alcantara isn't really under the radar any more, but he's going to make some jumps (even more than he already has) over the next 12 months. I'm a sucker for Mauricio Cabrera, and I may be a year early pegging him for a leap like that, but he's a guy I'd pick. (Mark Anderson)
2013-11-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Any of these prospects jump off the board for you? Rosell Herrera, Nick Williams, Ryan McMahon, Arismendy Alcantara, and Jesse Winker. What are your thoughts? Thanks Ben!
(Ryan from Cincy)
Last pinch hitting appearance from Mark Anderson: "The two that jump out the most to me are Williams and Alcantara. Williams is a gifted natural hitter and he could be an impact bat at the highest level. Alcantara can contribute in all phases of the game and he has some thump in his bat as well. I really like what Alcantara brings to the table. I've always been partial to Herrera and think he may have finally turned a corner in 2013, but I'm still a little skeptical of him."

Mark will be chatting at BP at 1 PM ET next Thursday, so show up then to get prospect questions answered without an intermediary. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)What sort of future grade would you put on Arismendy Alcantara and Taylor Lindsey? Assuming both are 2Bmen, who do you prefer?
(fake name from fake address)
Lindsey can be a solid everyday guy and Alcantara could peak a little better than that. I'm a big Lindsey fan but I'd have to take Alcantara long term. I think he's got a little louder tool set and I think he has a fair chance of being a better Major League player. (Mark Anderson)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for doing the chat! Who are some fast-rising/surprise prospects that might show up on the BP101 next year?
(boneil33 from Boston)
Tyler Glasnow has shot up prospect lists this season, and look for Arismendy Alcantara to get a serious look for the top101. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Arismendy Alcantara make the top 100?
(Josh from Kansas)
He might. He will be in the mix, I assume. (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects)
2013-06-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Daniel, thanks for the chat. I'm a Cubs fan. The big league team is hard to watch but there are some intriguing prospects. Among Baez (4 HR's yesterday-wow), Kris Bryant (assuming he signs), Almora, Brett Jackson, Soler, and Vogelbach...do you think that the Cubs have the best crop of power hitting prospects in the minors? I know the system is probably not considered as a top 10 but it seems as though there is some excitement around the position prospects.
(Steve from Office)
Hey, Steve. That is definitely an impressive crop, albeit with some question marks about Jackson's future and Vogelbach's ability to handle a defensive position. I'll toss in one more name to keep a close eye on: Arismendy Alcantara, who is scorching the ball of late for Double-A Tennessee. A largely homegrown, potent lineup could be coming by 2015, and the system may well climb into the top 10 heading into next year (Parks ranked it 12th this spring). (Daniel Rathman)
2013-05-30 13:30:00 (link to chat)Arismendy Alcantara has been red hot lately, what can you tell me about him? what position do you think he'll play?
(Jarrod from Lake Forest, Ill)
Alcantara is a very nice little player. He has some hitting ability with some line-drive punch and plus speed, giving him a well-rounded offensive profile. Defensively, he has the tools to play shortstop but I'm not sure he will settle into the position. I think he ends up at second base in the end. (Mark Anderson)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Random "watch list" question. What are your thoughts on Arismendy Alcantara and Adam Morgan?
(Mitch from Iowa)
Both are good players to watch. Higher on Alcantara than Morgan, but Morgan's much closer to making a major league impact. (Bret Sayre)
