2018 It's hard to tell if Alexander’s name is more reminiscent of an off-Broadway musical star, a poet or a shockingly wealthy candidate for the House of Representatives. What we can tell: He throws with his left hand, has a prodigious ground-ball rate, generates enough strikeouts and has an upward trajectory on his resume. That might just sound like closer material in Kansas City, at least these days. He already earned the ninth-inning call from manager Ned Yost in several of the garbage-time games of 2017, and Alexander will be given every chance to show that his solid campaign—which included better work versus righties than lefties—was for real.
2017 He's not your garden variety LOOGY, but Alexander is certainly useful against same-siders. His .627 OPS allowed versus left-handed bats was 200 points better than he fared with righties across all levels in 2016. Even better, he surrendered just four extra-base hits against those lefties in 85 plate appearances. His bread-and-butter pitch is the sinker. He induced a grounder on 81 percent of all two-seamers put in play. In the days of the eight-man bullpen, Alexander can certainly find a place as a second southpaw.
2016 Triple-A closer Scott Alexander uses his low-90s sinker to generate double-play bouncers and doesn't hurt himself with walks and home runs. He'll get a look-see for a middle relief role this spring, but he has a lot of bodies to climb over.
