BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2007 On August 31, Theo Epstein raised the white flag over Fenway Park by trading David Wells to the Padres and acquiring 37-year-old journeyman Kevin Jarvis, who`d spent parts of twelve seasons with nine different teams, accumulating an ERA above 6.00. We have to assume it was done for the sake of amusement. The alternative is nightmarish: if Jarvis is your final answer, you haven`t just asked the wrong question, you`ve shown up naked for the test.
2006 It might seem like a cruel joke to give him a full-length comment, but he did just put up a solid season as the unnecessary veteran starter a phone call away from patching a hole in the major league rotation. Jarvis showed that he`s healthy again, earned a Triple-A All-Star berth, and got himself a minor league contract and spring training invite with Arizona. Wonders never cease.
2004 One of the worst contracts in recent memory goes on and on, as Jarvis is still due $4.25 million in 2004 and a $500,000 buyout in 2005. At the time of the deal, Jarvis had a career ERA of 5.91 and was coming off a career year in which he'd had a 4.80 ERA and given up 2,000 home runs. Since then, he's been alternately injured and ineffective. The financial commitment to him not only ties up funds better used on Mike Cameron or Greg Maddux or a Rockwell's Greatest Hit CD, it also means that he may have to be in the rotation, hurting the Pads' chances of being a surprise team in '04. Swapped to the Mariners for Jeff Cirillo in a deal designed to make familiar problems go away in exchange for new ones.
2003 Elbow surgery ended Jarvisís season early. Heís under contract through 2004, and has been rumored in every potential trade out of San Diego, including one to the Royals. He should remain a crafty right-hander without great stuff, but someone who can hopefully eat some innings and give his team a chance to win. That said, signing him long-term was not Kevin Towersís most shining moment.
2002 Despite being a long shot to make the team, Jarvis got the chance to start with the Padres and ended up leading the staff in wins. At his best, he's an innings-munching #4 starter with a taterrific streak. The three-year contract the Padres gave him was one of the stranger deals of the winter; he's not a good bet to repeat even the mild success of 2001.
2001 I donít have an explanation, but the Rockies were 13-6 when Kevin Jarvis started and 9-3 when Julian Tavarez started. Both work quickly and both are ground-ball pitchers. Jarvis can throw just about any pitch for a strike, although none of them move especially well. Heíll have to fight past Masato Yoshii and Brian Rose to make the rotation.
1998 Make a quick histogram of those translated ERAs. Consistent pitcher, but so is Rany Jazayerli. Scouts canít understand why this guy canít get people out, but hitters do.
1997 Very possibly the next Jeff Bittiger. Not likely to ever really be effective, and his mechanics scare the hell out of me.
1996  When he pitched the first complete game in the majors last year, he was greeted with huzzahs by most of the media. I looked at it somewhat differently: how important a player could Kevin Jarvis be if the Davey Johnson was so willing to let him finish a game, despite having a strong bullpen. As it turns out, Jarvis went on to get hammered and eventually ended up back in Indianapolis. No prospect.
