2019-11-07 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think this offseason will drag to the finish line like the past 2 seasons with good players left without a dance partner and having to take a lower/shorter deal?
(sportsguy21792 from Madison)
I think it has the potential to, yes. I'm at least a little optimistic that the big names will come off the board a little bit earlier (by the end of 2019 would be great), but I do fear we're going to get into February and wonder why Kole Calhoun got a one-year, $10M deal, Corey Dickerson is still available, and Jose Iglesias is taking an NRI.

It's not great! (Free Agent Chat w/Collin Whitchurch)
2018-12-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Anticipating that he will be the everyday shortstop when he suits up for Detroit this spring, Jordy Mercer will be the most-experienced player to make his team debut at that position for the Tigers since Jhonny Peralta in 2010 and the oldest (I think) since Adam Everett in 2009. I've scouted Mercer's modest stat line, but you've watched him regularly with the Pirates. What do you think it's reasonable for the Tigers to expect to get from Mercer in 2019?
(Alec Denton from Atlanta)
Mercer is your basic generic shortstop. The advanced metrics all agree that he's become a below-average fielder, but it's more a case of him not making the spectacular play than butchering routine ones. Jose Iglesias he's not. Two things to be concerned about. First, he's never played more than 149 games in a season, so expect to see a fair amount of Ronny Rodriguez. Second, the bat, which was acceptable in 2016 and 2017, declined in 2018. Could be injuries, or could be a guy who's 32. In any case, he's down-in-the-order placeholder, but looking at the Tigers' farm system, I'm not exactly sure for whom. Isaac Paredes? Tigers gonna win, what, 65-75 games this year, maybe? Mercer's not going to keep them out of the postseason or anything. (Rob Mains)
2015-04-06 20:15:00 (link to chat)Liriano walking Cueto was the key in the Reds win. Caused the fielders choice leading to Hamilton getting on, then 1st to 3rd, then balk. Dodgers fan? Sure you'd love the DH, they'd employ one for $20mil Bob Lemon, Carlos Zambrano, and Rick Rhoden scorn you
(D Brown from Da burgh )
Johnny Cueto is a career .101/.128/.132/.104 hitter. Bob Lemon was .232/.288/.386 and was the best of the players you mentioned with a 676 OPS. Jose Iglesias has a career 678 OPS. This isn't a winning argument. (Craig Goldstein)
2015-04-06 20:15:00 (link to chat)Rhoden was once used as a DH by the Yankees. He hit over .300 in seasons 9years apart. How many hitters can say that. Craig.... I could see if you were blinded by AL fandom. I'll end my side of this spat by saying that Ray Kinsella from Field of Dreams would side with me on this.
(D brown from Da burgh)
You're talking about samples of under 100 PA. And he was Jose Iglesias level at the plate over his whole career, so it still doesn't carry weight. Also, the guy you're closing with is a made up character, so I'm not sure that's your best angle, either. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Curious about your thoughts on Avisail Garcia's ceiling and if DET will eventually regret that trade?
(Mike from Detroit)
Whether or not Detroit regrets the trade depends on the outcome of Jose Iglesias' time there. If he's the everyday shortstop and provides good value in the field and at the bottom of the order, I'm not sure they're going to regret the deal too much.

As for Garcia himself, I think he can be an above-average regular in right field. Defenisvely, he's going to be an asset there with good instincts, average speed and a big arm. Offensively, even with an aggressive approach, he's got a feel to hit and there's power in the bat. (Mark Anderson)
2013-09-12 18:00:00 (link to chat)We just started round 1 of the playoffs, and my shortstop situation is dire. Who would you choose the rest of the season among Asdrubal Cabrera, Yunel Escobar, and Jose Iglesias?
(Alex from Anaheim)
Hi Alex. That's pretty dire.

This answer depends mostly on the rest of your roster. I think I'd stay away from Iglesias. He has already cooled off, and while he is in a strong line-up (which helps with the runs/RBI), I think he's the weakest choice of the three. That leaves Cabrera and Escobar. Escobar is the safer choice while Asdrual has the higher ceiling. If you need to play it safe, I'd go with Yunel. But the more I look at the two, I think I'd roll the dice on Cabrera. Cabrera's bad year is almost as good as Yunel's 2013. Assuming Cabrera's healthy, he should put up similar numbers. The only drawback with Cabrera is that he has been sitting at time for Mike Aviles. Still, I'd take the shot on Cabrera bouncing back this month. (Mike Gianella)
2013-08-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Sending this in early (the 29th) so this question may be dated but why don't the Red Sox call up Bogaerts to fix their hole at 3b? ...And why does your input window think "Sox" is misspelled?
(goiter6 from MN)
Not only does it remain relevant, but the Jose Iglesias trade (and Michael Young non-trade) makes it more timely than before.

I suppose the answer hinges on how the Red Sox feel about Will Middlebrooks and Xander Bogaerts. More to the point: Do they think Middlebrooks is the third baseman of the future, or at least the near future? And do they think moving Bogaerts to third base will impact his development at shortstop? There are other variables here, too-is Bogaerts' bat ready, for instance, and so on.

At any rate, it wouldn't surprise me to see Bogaerts at third base for Boston before the season ends. So I'm not sure it's a fait accompli that it won't happen. It just hasn't happened yet. (R.J. Anderson Trade Deadline Wrap Chat)
2013-07-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)How fast, and how far do Jose Iglesias' stats fall? Hitting out of this world.
(Larry from Kansas City)
Fast, given that he doesn't have a lot of plate appearances to buoy any rate stats, but not that far given that he may not get all that many more if the hits start falling. He hasn't beaten BABIP. (Zachary Levine)
2013-04-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Pete Kozma and Jose Iglesias? They have both looked good so far this spring/year. Think they will be ok offensively?
(Todd from Dallas)
I made up my mind on Kozma last year and I don't have enough time in the day to reassess him continually, so I'll say "Meh" and "no." There are too many baseball players.

Iglesias won't be ok offensively, either, but don't care, won't ever care. (Sam Miller)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)WHo has a longer major league career Jose Iglesias or Christian Colon?
(Ray from Minneapolis)
Iglesias can play in the majors for 10 years on the back of his glove alone. (Jason Parks)
2012-11-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who plays SS for the Red Sox on opening day 2013?
(kpLUCH from Chicago)
If it's not Jose Iglesias, then I don't know. I've heard the same rumblings about TEX shopping Andrus, but that seems crazy to me. (Ian Miller)
2012-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are there guys that missed the list with 80 tools?
(Brian from Chicago)
Plenty of 80 runners. Some put an 80 of Jose Iglesias' glove. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-02-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Obviously the glove is impeccable, but where do you see Jose Iglesias' bat maxing out? Can he ever become an Orlando Cabrera-type offensive player, or is that aiming too high?
(Pat H from Cambridge, MA)
I don't think that's aiming too high at all. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-11-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Jose Iglesias hitting his ceiling as a top of the order bat with slick defense in the majors?
(Jessica from New York)
I don't know anyone who saw his ceiling as a top of the order bat. More bottom of the order with Gold Glove defense. (Kevin Goldstein)
