2018-12-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)	Anticipating that he will be the everyday shortstop when he suits up for Detroit this spring, Jordy Mercer will be the most-experienced player to make his team debut at that position for the Tigers since Jhonny Peralta in 2010 and the oldest (I think) since Adam Everett in 2009. I've scouted Mercer's modest stat line, but you've watched him regularly with the Pirates. What do you think it's reasonable for the Tigers to expect to get from Mercer in 2019? (Alec Denton from Atlanta)	Mercer is your basic generic shortstop. The advanced metrics all agree that he's become a below-average fielder, but it's more a case of him not making the spectacular play than butchering routine ones. Jose Iglesias he's not. Two things to be concerned about. First, he's never played more than 149 games in a season, so expect to see a fair amount of Ronny Rodriguez. Second, the bat, which was acceptable in 2016 and 2017, declined in 2018. Could be injuries, or could be a guy who's 32. In any case, he's down-in-the-order placeholder, but looking at the Tigers' farm system, I'm not exactly sure for whom. Isaac Paredes? Tigers gonna win, what, 65-75 games this year, maybe? Mercer's not going to keep them out of the postseason or anything. (Rob Mains)

Sure you'd love the DH, they'd employ one for $20mil Bob Lemon, Carlos Zambrano, and Rick Rhoden scorn you (D Brown from Da burgh )	Johnny Cueto is a career .101/.128/.132/.104 hitter. Bob Lemon was .232/.288/.386 and was the best of the players you mentioned with a 676 OPS. Jose Iglesias has a career 678 OPS. This isn't a winning argument. (Craig Goldstein)

(Mike from Detroit)	Whether or not Detroit regrets the trade depends on the outcome of Jose Iglesias' time there. If he's the everyday shortstop and provides good value in the field and at the bottom of the order, I'm not sure they're going to regret the deal too much. As for Garcia himself, I think he can be an above-average regular in right field. Defenisvely, he's going to be an asset there with good instincts, average speed and a big arm. Offensively, even with an aggressive approach, he's got a feel to hit and there's power in the bat. (Mark Anderson)

Who would you choose the rest of the season among Asdrubal Cabrera, Yunel Escobar, and Jose Iglesias? (Alex from Anaheim)	Hi Alex. That's pretty dire. This answer depends mostly on the rest of your roster. I think I'd stay away from Iglesias. He has already cooled off, and while he is in a strong line-up (which helps with the runs/RBI), I think he's the weakest choice of the three. That leaves Cabrera and Escobar. Escobar is the safer choice while Asdrual has the higher ceiling. If you need to play it safe, I'd go with Yunel. But the more I look at the two, I think I'd roll the dice on Cabrera. Cabrera's bad year is almost as good as Yunel's 2013. Assuming Cabrera's healthy, he should put up similar numbers. The only drawback with Cabrera is that he has been sitting at time for Mike Aviles. Still, I'd take the shot on Cabrera bouncing back this month. (Mike Gianella)

(goiter6 from MN)	Not only does it remain relevant, but the Jose Iglesias trade (and Michael Young non-trade) makes it more timely than before. I suppose the answer hinges on how the Red Sox feel about Will Middlebrooks and Xander Bogaerts. More to the point: Do they think Middlebrooks is the third baseman of the future, or at least the near future? And do they think moving Bogaerts to third base will impact his development at shortstop? There are other variables here, too-is Bogaerts' bat ready, for instance, and so on. At any rate, it wouldn't surprise me to see Bogaerts at third base for Boston before the season ends. So I'm not sure it's a fait accompli that it won't happen. It just hasn't happened yet. (R.J.
