2015-04-16 17:00:00 (link to chat)Mike, Who wins the closers job in Detroit or do they trade for Papelbon?
(John from CT)
They'll probably stick with Joakim Soria unless the Phillies eat a ton of money or if Jon Papelbon negotiates away the vesting option. Bruce Rondon is the sleeper there. I suspect Joe Nathan is toast. (Mike Gianella)
2014-11-04 18:00:00 (link to chat)Is there any legitimate help coming for the Tigers bullpen depth from the minors? Any guys they might switch from starter to reliever?
(whoisthedrizzle from Michigan)
The Tigers always have hard-throwing arms coming through the system, but the guys that are on the immediate horizon right now aren't necessarily impact arms that are going to help salvage the late innings right away. They will have Bruce Rondon coming back from TJ surgery, and I'm still high on him as a potential closer long term. He likely fits better in the 7th inning in 2015 but if his recovery keeps moving along smoothly, he could be an impact arm for them. Jose Valdez is a AA closer that has massive control concerns, but he has plenty of raw stuff and a little bit of FU on the bump. He could help at some point this season. Angel Nesbitt made huge strides in 2014 and has mostly a 7th inning projection, but he lights up the radar gun and can throw enough strikes to be a factor. One guy I'd keep an eye on as a bit of a sleeper in the bullpen race for the Tigers is Edgar De La Rosa. He's a massive dude with an equally massive fastball, a changeup that can play, and a slider that's slowly coming along. I've always projected him to the bullpen, and if they opt to make that move, he could blow up a bit....he'll get added to the 40-man roster this winter, so his name should start bouncing around a bit. (Mark Anderson)
2014-09-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Sam, Which non-closers should I pick up now on the chance they will close in 2015?
(Cal Guy from Cal)
Wade Davis, Ken Giles, Kevin Jepsen, Bruce Rondon... though not necessarily closing in April 2005. Trying to figure out who is going to close for the Giants next year. Who's going to close for the Giants next year? I'll say Jason Motte is going to close for the Giants next year. Enjoy this prediction, Giants fans and fantasy owners, I wrote it just for you! (Sam Miller)
2014-04-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Bruce Rondon on the DL with TJ surgery, what are the chances of the Tigers making a trade with the Cubs for Hector Rondon and then inserting him as closer?
(ChoppertoChipper from Edmonton)
92% (Paul Sporer)
2013-11-22 14:00:00 (link to chat)Does Bruce Rondon have a chance at being the closer in Detroit next year?
(Oscar from Detroit)
He certainly has a chance, and you have to think that he is being groomed for the role long-term. The issue is pitch command, as having a volatile closer is a disaster waiting to happen, but I think that Rondon made positive strides last season toward a more permanent role finishing games.

2013-08-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Bruce Rondon begin next year as Tigers closer?

It went through all 200 times. I'll give it a maybe. It'd depend regardless, but it REALLY depends how their season ends with this team. (Paul Sporer)

2013-08-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Not sure if this went through or not, my apologies if it did. Do you think Bruce Rondon will begin next year as Tigers closer?

:) (Paul Sporer)
2013-04-30 12:00:00 (link to chat)Chances Bruce Rondon takes over as closer this year?
(Shawn from My Cubicle)
Permanently? Less than 50 percent. For a few weeks? Better than 50 percent. The stuff is exciting but the command issues are legit. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-04-25 12:30:00 (link to chat)Do you see Bruce Rondon winning the closer job this year?
(Shawn from Office)
Yes. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-03-06 20:00:00 (link to chat)What closer do you think loses his job first?
(Wes from Texas)
Bruce Rondon, does he count? Was he ever the closer in Detroit? For an actual closer, I'd be shaking in my boots if I were Brandon League with Kenley Jansen behind me. (Paul Singman)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Bruce Rondon's chances of succeeding at closer the entire year? Is this a wise move by the Tigers?
(dangor from New York)
I don't think he has the command profile to have sustainable success as a closer at the major league level. (Jason Parks)
2013-01-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Bruce Rondon saves ___ number of games of the Tigers this year. Tru or false: Rondon has the team lead in saves among Tigers players this season?
(Mike from Dover, DE)
I like this question. I'll take a guess and say 15 games. I know Jim Leyland has been quoted as saying Rondon will be in the mix for the closer gig in Spring Training, so it's possible he breaks camp with the gig. I do think Joaquin Benoit could help ease Rondon into the closer job if they go that route as well. (Josh Shepardson)
2013-01-16 13:30:00 (link to chat)Do you think Bruce Rondon is ready to step into the closer role and hold it?
(Donnie Baseball from SoCal)
I touched on Rondon earlier, but yes, I do think he is ready. He was a completely different pitcher last year, both in terms of his attitude on the mound and his execution. He is the best relief pitcher prospect in the game for me. (Mark Anderson)
2012-08-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Odds Bruce Rondon enters 2013 as the Tigers' closer. Joaquin Benoit seems to love the 8th. Brayan Villarreal a possibility?
(RationalSportsFan from detroit)
I'd be shocked to see him open camp in a closer role, or even in the big leagues. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-06-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Highest radar gun reading you've ever seen?
(Flotsam from Grimwood )
My jaw dropped when Bruce Rondon hit 103 on a Stalker gun in a relief outing in Tampa a few weeks ago. (Bradley Ankrom)
