BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2015 Daniel Corcino is a sinker/slider pitcher who touches 90 on a good day, walks too many hitters and doesn't miss bats. Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln ...
2014 After a promising 2012, Corcino collapsed in Louisville, as every statistic vaulted in the wrong direction. Most revealing is the 12 percent walk rate—a number that has risen annually due to command and control issues. Corcino throws across his body with high effort and he failed to find a consistent release point despite multiple attempted adjustments. The result: elevated, low-90s fastballs that met hard contact and an opponents' slugging percentage of .473. Standing just 5-foot-11, the lack of a downward plane is a depressant, but an above-average slider and sinking changeup perk him up. He’ll have another year to work on his control; if he fails, relief duties might be in his future.
2013 Corcino sometimes draws comparisons to Johnny Cueto because of their similar stature, background, organization, and arm strength. He throws with a lot of effort, which leads to control problems, and he tends to leave pitches up in the zone. Corcino's secondary stuff is still in development, and an eventual move to the bullpen could be in his future, depending on how well that goes. The Reds were very aggressive in having him skip High-A last year, and despite the sharp—and unsurprising—decline in K/BB that accompanied the jump, he met the challenge.
2012 Any preconceived notions that right-handers under 6 feet tall might not stick as starters get chucked when they come attached to someone with heat that touches the mid-90s and an effective slider and change with tremendous separation. With those kinds of gifts, this young Dominican's getting taken seriously as a starter, and he rewarded that confidence with a solid full-season debut. He's a long way from ready, and he'll have to dispel concerns over durability year after year, but for the time being he's worth noting as another worthwhile product of the Reds' Caribbean scouting effort.

2013-07-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)What is the word on Daniel Corcino? Horrible numbers at AAA. I know he's just 22, but the numbers are hideous. Maybe they rushed him a bit...or is he just not very good?
(gilpdawg from OH)
The numbers are atrocious across the board, but there is some reason for optimism. I don't think that Corcino was rushed necessarily, but he has never demonstrated very inspirational control numbers. I like his power grades, from a mechanical standpoint, with solid torque and plus momentum (especially the second gear). His command issues come down to inconsistent balance and poor repetition of mechanical timing, and he lacks the top-end velocity to get by when his fastball command is off-track. Corcino has a future, but he is also a work in progress. (Doug Thorburn)

(Tommy from Vermolusca)
Seems like that's the plan, though a potentially greater concern is that the Reds lack a proven sixth starter. Tony Cingrani and Daniel Corcino have upside, but I'm not sure either of them would be ready to approximate the performance the Reds are expecting from their other starters. (Daniel Rathman)

(William from Pensacola, FL)
I wish I could give you a 2-paragraph diatribe on each of these guys, but unfortunately I have not yet had the pleasure of watching them pitch. With prospect mechanics, it is crucial to be open-minded about the past, present, and future - they can show widely disparate mechanical profiles month-to-month and even start-to-start, and they are often focusing on one element at a time during development. You often hear about a pitcher scrapping a particular pitch in order to work on his other offerings, and it can be a similar story with mechanics, where a pitcher is toying with (for example) his momentum during a game and trying to find the same timing pattern on all of his pitches.
