2016-11-22 20:00:00 (link to chat)Is Aaron Judge going to be Jon Singleton 2.0? I know it's likely way too early to tell but the contact issues scare the crap out of me.
(Bobby from Albany)
I mentioned this exact thing on the podcast this week, but I'm uncomfortable giving Jon Singleton as a comp for anyone given his personal issues. There's probably a lot there that we don't know, and even with what we do, it has to have hurt his development.

I still believe in Judge. (Jarrett Seidler)
2016-09-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think A.J. Reed or Aaron Judge will be good major league bats? Or have they gone the way of Jon Singleton?
(ColeWhittier from Pasadena, CA)
Judge strikes me more as a Gallo than a Singleton, which truthfully doesn't make me any more sure of what he's capable of. I think I'm always more willing to believe in giant people who can hit baseballs a mile than I should be, but I'd say Judge is unlikely to hit a Singleton styled floor. He'd slay, for instance, in the NPB.

Reed is harder -- I have a real problem with 1B only prospects, even when they look like special bats, and so Reed always worried me. I can only box score scout in the time here, but it seems like it's a decent enough bet that he'll figure something out. But will it be enough to be a good-enough first baseman in the AL West? Ehhhhhhh (Trevor Strunk)
2016-03-07 13:00:00 (link to chat) Astro's Matt Duffy: Does he win the 1B job out of camp? Will he be a seat warmer or does he stand a chance at performing and delaying AJ Reed's arrival?
(Jmax from Niagara, On)
He may win less than half the 1B job, but I think that Jon Singleton will get every opportunity to play the lion's share of games, especially before Evan Gattis comes back. I also think there's no chance he'll delay AJ's arrival ... since he's a righty and AJ's a lefty, I imagine the only thing that could slow AJ is Singleton really hitting the cover off the ball. (Bryan Grosnick)
2016-03-09 19:00:00 (link to chat)Which group sucks less? Anthony Alford, Rusney Castillo, Manuel Margot, Brett Phillips, Nick Williams,Spencer Adams, Mark Appel, Dylan Cease, Josh Hader, James Kapeielian, Triston McKenzie,Vince Velasquez or Blake Swihart, Jon Singleton, Dansby Swanson, Alex Jackson, Clayton Blackburn,Tyrell Jenkins, Rob Kaminsky, Zach Lee, Keuy Mella, Justin Nicolino, Aaron Nola, Tyler Jay. God these teams are awful.
(Clark from The 19th Hole)
The first group, but you're right, but they're both bad. (Mike Gianella)
2016-02-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jon Singleton and Richie Shafer will both be given the opportunity this spring to finally live up to their long ago expectations and become starters in 2016. What say you are their chances of finally making the bigs as regulars?
(JM from CT)
Better Singleton's than Shaffer's, I think. Singleton is down to his last chance in Houston; I think we all agree there. Shaffer has a tougher path to playing time, and I think he's just not quite the hitter he needs to be to make it work. (Matthew Trueblood)
2015-07-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Hi George. What are your short- and long-term takes on Jon Singleton? He seems to be having the same problem as last year translating his minor league performance to the majors, although this year is still a very small sample size. Thanks.
(thresh50 from Boston)
Quad-A. I'm sorry. There's still hope, but given the options Houston has on the roster already and guys like Conrad Gregor and AJ Reed (both of whom I love) he's running out of time from a bigger picture. (George Bissell)
2015-06-30 19:00:00 (link to chat)Is this the year Jon Singleton lives up to his promise with the 'Stros?
(John from CT)
I doubt it, if only because it's crowded right now and I don't see him getting enough at bats. He needs a trade or an injury. If that happens, I think he could be solid, but I don't see him living up ALL the hype that surrounded him way back when. (Mike Gianella)
2015-06-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Jon Singleton ever become a legit 25-30 home run a year guy with high walk totals? Maybe something similar to Chris Davis?
(Jason from Georgie)
I'm skeptical because I'm always skeptical about guys with massive hit-tool, athleticism, and makeup questions. (R.J. Anderson)
2015-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is there any hope for Jon Singleton??
(Humorous from Everywhere)
Definitely hope for Jon Singleton. People are too quick to write off prospects after they struggle a little in their first exposure to the major leagues. In Singleton's case, he shows good fundamentals: pitchers throw him fewer strikes, and he has decent plate discipline. He was stung last year by terrible BABIP (in the .230s I believe), and that should go back upwards. In short, I am bullish on Singleton: although he may never be a great player, he should be at least a good hitter for a few years. (Rob Arthur)
2015-01-20 19:30:00 (link to chat)Whats a realistic prediction for Jon Singleton in 2015? And would John Singleton the director, strike out less? (Boyz in the Hood was STRONG)
(Ash from TX)
Such a STRONG question for so many reasons. Let's go .240 with 19 homers for Singleton in 2015. (Ben Carsley)
2015-02-13 19:00:00 (link to chat)If your dynasty league was a 7x7 cat with BB and OPS, which prospects would you target who you think could provide high BB totals with lots of power?
(Greg from Minnesota)
Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler are obvious, which means I'm sure they're gone. Matt Olson is a fun name who doesn't get enough play. Kyle Schwarber is great and I haven't given up on Jon Singleton yet. (Mike Gianella)
2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Jonathan Singleton down the stretch? He's supposedly made some swing adjustments and is hitting lefties. Good source for cheap power? Do you like him over someone like Josh Reddick?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
They're about equal in my eyes, but Singleton has less competition for ABs from what I can tell. I'd roll the dice on him. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-06-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)True/False- Jonathan Singleton will put better rest of season numbers than Chris Carter?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
True. (Ron Shah)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm in an AL only dynasty league. Chris Davis is in the last year of his rookie contract (I drafted him several years ago), so one dollar, for one year. I don't think I'm a championship caliber team this year and looking to move him. I was offered Jonathan Singleton for Davis. While this obviously is terrible at face value, guys have no contract until they're called up. I then would get a 6 year contract at a dollar per year for Singleton, regardless of production. What say you?
(Jesse from NY)
That's complicated. I'd probably hold out for a better offer, but I might take that come mid-season. I recently traded a $6 Davis who I could keep at that price for one more year or extend at a $5 raise per season, for a $1 Rendon, a $1 Ventura and a $9 McCann. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Would like your thoughts on Jonathan Singleton for 2014? Will he have any impact in MLB for the Astros?
(Ben from San Antonio)
I've soured quite a bit on Singleton, for a variety of reasons. If he gets everything together in advance of next season, I could see him finding his way to Houston late in the year, but that's stretching it if I am being honest in my evaluation. (Mark Anderson)
2013-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are you concerned about Jonathan SIngleton's struggles this year?
(Mikey from Louisiana)
I wrote about him in this week's Ten Pack. I'm not crazy concerned about the bat, because he still shows the tools there. He came back out of shape and the range at first base was way down from last year. I liked him at first last year, but it was fall-down range when I saw him in June. From what I've heard, he's dropped a little bit of weight since then. He'll need to continue getting back into shape this offseason, and if he does that, I don't have a ton of concern. Still think he hits at the end of the day, and that's what's important. (Jason Cole)
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Jonathan Singleton getting the callup anytime soon?
(ddriver80 from Winnipeg)
I don't see any reason for the Astros to start his clock. (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects)
2013-01-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)How do you handle the Jonathan Singleton situation if you're the Astros? Can they move him to the 40-man to avoid the suspension?
(andtinez from Houston)
I don't think they can do that. Somebody please correctly if your JDA knowledge is better than mine. You can move him to the 40-man if you're worried he'll smoke again and then he can avoid the next suspension, but he's stuck with this one. What do I do? Just make sure he's ready to play on day 51. I figure Oklahoma City this year and Houston either September or next April. (Zachary Levine)
2013-01-16 13:30:00 (link to chat)What player was a let down to you after you watched him the first time.
(William from Pensacola, FL)
I try to go into every viewing limiting my preconceived notions. That said, given all the hype surrounding Jonathan Singleton when he was with Clearwater (FSL), I was a little disappointed in what I saw. He looked stiff and slow at the plate. He's loosened up as he has matured and looks more like what he was billed as now, and you're seeing the results on the field as well. (Mark Anderson)
2013-01-16 13:30:00 (link to chat)Does Jonathan Singleton have a 30HR .300 season in him, or am I smoking the Wacky Tobacky?
(Grubby from Possumjaw, AR)
That's a little rich for me. I think he can hit .280 with 25 bombs a year, which is still a very nice player. (Mark Anderson)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)What kind of power potential do you see in Jonathan Singleton?
(fredlummis from Houston)
7 raw; most likely to play at 5 early, but should tick up as he matures as a hitter. (Jason Parks)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)If Brett Wallace struggles next year (his K% makes one think he might) and Jonathan Singleton is tearing up AAA (off to a nice AFL start right now), how soon before we see him get the call?
(Ashitaka1110 from Houston, TX)
I know a guy in the Astros front office. I'll ask around.... (Jason Parks)
2012-03-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Jason, thanks for the chat! What prospects do you like to take large leaps up the rankings during this season?
(Jon KK from Elkhart, Ind.)
Jonathan Singleton, Brad Boxberger, Mikie Mahtook, Kolten Wong (Jason Collette)
2011-12-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)Me thinking out loud : Jared Cosart will be lucky to develop into a top closer and Jonathan Singleton will be lucky to even reach the majors ? True or false ?
(Spirou from Montreal)
I think that's pessimistic. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Did the Astros trade Hunter for Pence on the pound sterling? Feel free to use that one. What one? (Simpsons reference)
(Tbirds from Seattle)
Joke and Simpsons reference aside, the Astros got a very nice return on Pence. Kevin Goldstein had both Jarred Cosart and Jonathan Singleton among his top five prospects traded at the deadline, with Josh Zied among his potential sleepers. By comparison, the Astros got only one of the top 10 prospects dealt in the Michael Bourn deal (Brett Oberholtzer) plus one sleeper (Paul Clemens) AND they had to take on Jordan Schafer, who is the most obvious Astro in the history of obviousness. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-02-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Jonathan Singleton have the chops to make the move to LF? Please say yes.
(Ruben from PA)
I think he could at least be adequate there. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-01-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Kevin, love the chats. Now that my Fiesta Bowl passing record is safe, who do you think is the top breakout candidate for 2011 from this list: Aaron Hicks, Wilmer Flores, Jonathan Singleton.
(BrowningNagle from Louisville, KY)
A. (Kevin Goldstein)
