2017 Towering Mike Ohlman hits well enough when judged against other catchers, plays catcher well enough when judged against first basemen and crushes lefties well enough that he could yet carve out a career as a platoon bat.
2016 For all the caveats in this book about players' future defensive homes—"if he can improve his reads," "if he can learn the footwork," and so on—Ohlman is evidence that sometimes none of it matters. He's an inconsistent thrower and substandard receiver whose size is likely to prevent him from gaining low strikes. So why hasn't Ohlman moved to first base? Because while his bat is the best part of the package, it isn't so good as to play at a less-demanding defensive position. Ohlman is probably a year or two from sliding there anyway, but for now the Cardinals will continue to hold out hope he can make it as a backup catcher.
2015 At 6-feet-4, Michael Ohlman is a catcher in name only. He doesn't use his size well at the dish, and it hinders him behind it.
2014 A late bloomer, Ohlman did nothing of import during his first two and a half seasons; a suspension for drug abuse was his only headline. Perhaps the time off served as a wakeup call, though, because Ohlman returned to put up an .868 OPS in the final 51 games of 2012. Forget using 2013 to show it was real: Ohlman blew way past real, exploding with a massive season despite a slow start, including a missed month due to a shoulder injury stemming from a car accident early in the spring. Ohlman's defense is suspect, but if the bat lives up to its potential, he can sustain value even with a change in positions.
2010 An 11th-round pick to whom the O's gave nearly a million dollars, Michael Ohlman has huge power, but there are a lot of questions about his ability to stay behind the plate long-term.

He's lagging behind the plate with his feet. They are just too slow and he's not getting down in time for blocking. The footwork has been a huge detriment to his arm as well. Plus raw arm strength, but he can't make the conversion to behind the plate. Constantly have him at 2.05+ pop times, which is not good enough for the majors. (Tucker Blair)
