2018 Frequently called "The Herrmannator" by the team's Twitter account and by the Arizona broadcasters, the Diamondbacks' third catcher/outfielder/pinch-hitter probably should have requested more than boots, clothes and a motorcycle. Herrmann backslid from a shockingly strong 2016 campaign to slip under replacement level (and the Mendoza line) again. At age 30, this is probably who he is. Because he can play behind the plate and has some pop in his bat, he'll keep getting jobs. It'll take more than hitting .186 to stop a Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 Herrmannator. He'll be back.
2017 It was brilliant, really. In the waning days of the 2014 season, the ever-prescient Dave Stewart knew roster troubles would be in the future for client Chris Herrmann, so he did what any self-respecting then-agent would do: he pulled some strings with his former manager, and got himself hired as GM of the Diamondbacks. "Now, to get expectations as low as possible," he said to no one in particular, trading Miguel Montero and patching a season's worth of catching out of Gerald Laird, Tuffy Gosewisch, Jordan Pacheco and Oscar Hernandez. When the Twins called to talk trade in advance of the Rule 5 cutoff in November of 2015, Stewart pounced, completing one of the most notorious heists of the 21st century. After he succeeded in getting Herrmann used as a center fielder in 2016, Stewart wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer.
2016 Chris Herrmann is versatile, in that he bats left-handed (terribly), and can play catcher (poorly) or either outfield spot (badly).
2015 You don't see many catcher/outfielders, so Herrmann's versatility has earned him a few trips to Target Field. There's one problem with building your career on versatility alone: You can't take your favorite versatility out of the versatility rack and use it to line a shot into the right-field gap, which is what Herrmann needs to do more often if he wants to stick around. The Twins don't seem convinced he has the defensive chops to be a backup catcher—mind you, this is a franchise that employed Ryan Doumit in that role—and his bat lacks the juice for an outfield corner, leaving Herrmann as a likely fixture in Rochester. Might we suggest the knuckleball?
2014 The versatile Herrmann spent his first extended time in the big leagues last summer, yet struggled through the least productive season of his career. He’s never been a top prospect, but his discerning eye, lefty gap power and ability to catch as well as play an outfield corner gave him the luster of an intriguing utility option. Solid behind the plate, Herrmann uses his strong arm and quick release to gun down runners at a high rate, but last year he mysteriously stopped making contact or drawing walks and saw his on-base percentage plummet. The Twins are looking for someone to caddy for Josmil Pinto, and if Herrmann can rediscover the patience of his youth, he could be less of an automatic out than your typical backup backstop.
2013 Having shown impressive on-base skills in the minors, there's a good chance Chris Herrmann has a future in the big leagues as a fourth outfielder/third-string catcher.

2011-12-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)I don't think Chris Herrmann made your Twins' top 20, and I'm aware that there's a strong incentive for a Twins fan to pretend there's catching depth in the organization whether that's true or not. But he had a kind of nice 2011 that continued into the AFL. How likely is he to find his way onto the Twins roster in the next couple seasons and maybe do something useful as a bench player?

Definitely could happen with that realistic ceiling. (Kevin Goldstein)
