2018		We all play certain roles in life, it's just that some of us have the good fortune to have the contours and limits of those roles spelled out in painfully obvious detail. Such is the case of Kiké, a player who does some things well, does some other things not very well at all and shows precious middle ground between the two extremes. After a down year in 2016, he came back with a vengeance to reestablish himself as a vital member of the 25-man in Los Angeles, appearing once again at every position but the battery and throwing down a .310 TAv against southpaws. That was more than enough to offset a putrid .499 OPS against righties, though he managed to blur the lines a bit with a back-breaking grand slam off a right-hander amid an epic three-homer outburst in the pennant-clincher. With the first arbitrated pay raise of his career in pocket, he figures to line up in a similar role again for the Azul in 2018.
2017		A spark plug for the team in 2015, Hernandez short-circuited in 2016. The Dodgers had big plans for the lefty-mashing, multi-position-playing Puerto Rican as the weak-side platoon at the keystone, and possibly in center field. The plan started off well, as Hernandez belted two home runs off Madison Bumgarner in a mid-April game and finished the night hitting .440 batting average on the young season. Over the next 22 games, he hit .047/.180/.047. Thereafter, he spent the rest of the season hovering around the Mendoza Line. A ham both on-screen and off, the closest thing to a star turn that Hernandez pulled was a guest spot on The Bold and the Beautiful in September. Hernandez will hope for another crack at the role—and improved results—in 2017. Otherwise, his lines will get cut.
2016		It feels like Hernandez saw a highlight reel featuring Brock Holt and Brock Holt's hair and thought, “You know what, that looks pretty fun.” For the second year in the row, the super-utilityman played every position save first base, catcher and pitcher, and this time around Hernandez contributed with the bat, too. Despite walking less and striking out more, he improved in nearly every offensive category, riding a .364 BABIP to a .315 TAv. Can we reasonably expect Kiké to hit like that again? Probably not, but Hernandez's versatility and knack for hitting left-handed pitching make him an asset, even if he's miscast in the every-day-center-fielder role he assumed once Joc Pederson's struggles became too much to bear.
2015		If you could say one thing about Hernandez's 2014 season, it would be that he got around. Few players don five different uniforms in the course of a regular season, and even fewer play so many positions on the diamond for each of those squads. He suited up in eighteen different team-and-position combinations in 2014 alone. Of course, the reason most utility players are utility players is because they don't do any one thing particularly well. Hernandez has no carrying tool and, aside from his semi-breakout in 2014, he hasn't shown a propensity to hit much better than league-average at any level. To run it down: no speed on the basepaths, no power, average-ish defense and mediocre contact ability. He's the $3 stocking stuffer at eye-level near the hardware store checkout, the imperfect tool for any job. He'll be in some team's toolkit for a decade, but without punching much higher than replacement level.
