BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2015 The certified lefty-masher spent the first half of the season in Sacramento and, a couple U-turns aside, made a mark in Oakland with a handful of second-half homers (all against southpaws) while being deployed with the platoon advantage in 76 percent of his plate appearances. Pitchers have peppered the bottom of the zone against the towering Freiman in an attempt to get under his long swing; though the strategy works against him with breaking balls, it also plays right into his approach of dropping the hammer on heat.
2014 Freiman made the jump from Double-A (as a Rule 5 pick of the Astros, later claimed by the A's at the end of spring) and spent the entirety of his rookie season at the major-league level serving as the right-handed complement to Brandon Moss at first base. Freiman crushed southpaws in the minors and posted a solid .304/.352/.453 line versus major-league lefties last season, but he hit like a farsighted pitcher when he was on the wrong side of the platoon, slashing .167/.239/.167, though Bob Melvin wisely limited Freiman to just 46 such plate appearances. Standing 6-foot-8, Freiman is one of the game's all-time tallest position players, and he had to duck his way through the outstretched arms of his teammates as he barged through the A's "home run tunnel" after each of his four dingers.
2013 Nate Freiman, the Padres' eighth-round pick in 2009 out of Duke and a Rule 5 pick for Houston, is an enormous human being who can hit the ball a long way but has trouble with good fastballs.
