2017 When you're trying to figure out what to watch on Netflix, Justin Wilson is like Scrubs—a quirky fallback option, not your first choice but probably one you can agree upon with others. (Which explains three different teams over three seasons.) For one, he's a lefty with reverse splits, so what's even the point of picking up the ball with that hand? But his ability to mow down righties with a mid-90s fastball means he will eventually lock down a late-inning role. Until then, his name is called early and often, and the manager isn't burned for it.
2016 Wilson was a victim of circumstance, that circumstance being the existence of Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller. In New York he was doomed to be overshadowed so long as his numbers didn't jump off the page and perform a traditional Irish jig. Nonetheless, he put in a dominant season's work lengthening the bullpen and ensuring that the Yankees basically played in six-inning games, which are much easier on commuters and casual fans. He still won't be the closer in Detroit on Opening Day, but it's a lot easier to imagine him winding up in the role with the competition being Francisco Rodriguez and Mark Lowe than it was with Betances and Miller.
2015 Part of why relievers are volatile is their small samples on a seasonal basis, which allows one or two bad appearances to taint 45 good ones. Overall, it appears Wilson had a bad season. Dig deeper and that's not necessarily the case. In two appearances, Wilson managed to allow seven runs while only retiring two batters. Scratch those games from his seasonal line and his run average against decreases from 4.50 to 3.54, still not quite where he was in 2013, but not the nearly 120 percent change it looks like otherwise. Because the blow-ups were isolated, and because Wilson's other numbers remained strong, there's no reason to believe he won't resume being a quality late-inning reliever this season.
2014 Formerly a starting pitcher prospect with back-of-the-rotation aspirations, Wilson shifted to the bullpen and won a job with the big-league club. The move helped Wilson's peripherals: His walk rate improved along with his groundball rate, and his strikeouts remained solid. He averaged more than an inning per appearance and shut down batters (especially lefties) with his high release point, upper-90s fastball and low-90s cutter. Expect to see him work near the end of ballgames in 2014.
2013 Wilson is another starting pitching prospect nearing the show. A chunky southpaw, Wilson features a lively fastball and good-enough breaking ball. His command and third pitch are iffy, which limits his ceiling to that of a back-of-the-rotation starter. There’s some thought that the Pirates will shift him to the bullpen, where his stuff would play up. For now, he remains a starter. Expect Wilson to make his big-league debut in 2013.
2012 Following two and a half seasons of wildness in the rotation, the left-handed Wilson was tossed into the bullpen in Indianapolis. During short spurts, Wilson’s fastball can encroach the upper-90s and comes with impressive movement. Unfortunately, that velocity and movement cripple his ability to control the pitch. The Pirates have enough first-hand experience in soothing scattershotitis from strong arms in the bullpen that Wilson could progress into a nice relief arm if the Pirates choose to keep him in the pen.
2011 A beefy southpaw, Wilson opened eyes in 2010 by limiting Double-A hitters to a .215 batting average, but he has yet to conquer the control problems that have plagued him as both as amateur and pro. While his fastball is impressive in both velocity and movement, he has trouble throwing it for strikes, so while it's hard to hit, batters often let it pass and put him further behind in the count. If he can find just enough improvement to become what scouts like to call “effectively wild,” he could find himself in Pittsburgh at some point during the season.
