2011 What do you get when you cross a soft-tossing southpaw with a sudden inability to retire lefty hitters? A bus ticket to Toledo, thatís what. Ni started the year with a chance to work his way up the bullpen pecking order, but had trouble consistently throwing his off-speed pitches over the plate and saw his walk rate double, earning a mid-season demotion. Passed on the depth charts by Daniel Schlereth, Niís future is looking more and more situational. Though he was still able to manage 12 strikeouts per nine against lefties even in a down year, the Tigers won't be able to say "Ni" unless they place him back on the 40-man rosteróhe was outrighted in November.
2010 Ni was one of the leading pitchers in Taiwan, leading the league in strikeouts in 2008. He became a free agent when his team folded, a not uncommon happening in the American minors during the Great Depression and earlier. The Tigers signed him and let him play in the World Baseball Classic (or else he may have started the season in Detroit). He's a well-polished lefty with good control, a fairly weak fastball that tops out at 89 mph, a changeup, and a hard curve, all thrown sidearm. Lefties stand about much chance against him as a November turkey does of making it to December, hitting .113 in 62 at-bats.
