2015 This Coleman throws harder than the other Coleman who spat seeds in the Royals' bullpen last year and is a beat writer's dream to boot. A "Notes" column made flesh, Casey is the son and grandson of All-Star starters (Joe, in both cases), making these particular Colemen the first three-generation pitching family in major-league history. Other bullet points: Coleman pitched with Chris Sale at Florida Gulf Coast and beat him to the majors, and a mechanical change helped his fastball jump three full ticks since coming to Kansas City last spring. He has a decent slider to abet his mid-90s heater and found success in the Omaha 'pen last year, but walked more men than he whiffed in his Royals cameo. He should get another shot at low-leverage work.
2013 Some guys get a reputation as being "pitchers, not just throwers," and Coleman is one of those guys. The trouble is that he's been unable to translate that into success in the major leagues. Even on a seriously pitching-deficient Cubs team, Coleman was moved to relief work and got utterly torched in the process. It remains to be seen whether he'll be given another shot at achieving the dream of being a back-of-the-rotation starter. The Cubs would be wise to stick with the transition to middle relief.
2012 Coleman knows how to pitch. In fact, he got tabbed “Mini-Maddux” after Ryne Sandberg compared him to Greg Maddux in 2009. But even though one frisky radar gun recorded him topping 94 mph in 2011, Casey's four-seam fastball is more likely to arrive at or below 90, and as he learns even more about how to pitch, he'll avoid tossing that four-seamer anywhere near the strike zone. His two-seamer, curve (against righties) and change (against lefties) are somewhat more effective, but Coleman's upside more closely resembles the career of Mike Maddux than that of Mike's little brother.
2011 Casey, son of Joe son of Joe, is every bit the craftsman you might expect from the son and grandson of All-Star pitchers. He has sharp command of a sinker and changeup, an excellent move to first base, and a perfectionism that belies his youth. That said, he's not a flashy prospect as much as a fine-tuned organizational arm, a guy who knows what he's doing and gets the most out of what he has. There is room for improvement with his breaking stuff, but his ceiling is low, in that he might "just" be an employable back-end rotation starter instead of the third generation of Coleman All-Stars. A better real-world asset than a fantasy pick, he's probably the best near-term placeholder for the rotation if one of the veterans breaks down.
