2016 Anthony Bass managed to put together a serviceable if unspectacular season in the Ranger bullpen. His best feature is his ability to go multiple innings per appearance; dominating those innings is not his second-best feature.
2015 Although hard-throwing righty Anthony Bass missed two months to injury, a total of seven strikeouts, seven walks and six home runs in a season is as good a reason as any to drop the Bass.
2014 The once-promising Bass continued to backslide, splitting time between the Tucson rotation and the big-league bullpen, where he was used in low-leverage situations. He got hammered in both places and struggled to throw strikes in San Diego. Away from Petco, batters hit .345/.419/.545 against him, and his career OPS against on the road is 180 points higher than at home—a trick that'll be tougher to pull now that his home is hitter-friendly Minute Maid Park. Bass works with a low-90s fastball and mid-80s slider and changeup, but only the slider misses bats. Lefties, who have always fared better against him than righties, torched him for a .974 OPS between two levels last year. His inconsistent command will keep him swinging between the rotation and bullpen and the majors and minors,
2013 After working mostly in relief as a rookie, Bass moved into the Padres rotation last year. He started strong before getting hit hard toward the end of May and into June. Then shoulder inflammation sidelined him for 2 and a half months. He returned to the bullpen before making one final regrettable start to end the season. Bass has good enough stuff to succeed at the back of a rotation, assuming his arm cooperates. Otherwise, he could end up in middle relief.
2012 Bass features an unusual delivery that elicits comparisons to that of San Francisco's Tim Lincecum. Bass, as do most mortals, lacks Lincecum's stuff and command but has a good feel for pitching. After starting the season in the San Antonio rotation, he was brought up midsummer and worked mostly out of the bullpen, where he added a few ticks to his fastball. When the Padres shut down Tim Stauffer at season's end, Bass took his spot in the rotation and pitched well in limited starting opportunities, although his command could have been better. Bass will compete for a spot at the back end of the Padres rotation in 2012 and could be effective in that role or as a swingman.
2011 Polished pitcher Anthony Bass posted a 3.13 ERA despite stranding just 65 percent of his baserunners. His fastball/changeup/breaking ball combination isn't special, but he can put the ball where he wants to, as evidenced by his 1.4 walks per nine innings at High-A this season. His command imparts back-of-the-rotation potential, though his stuff is just as likely to limit him to middle relief.
