2014 The book on Storey is pretty simple: he doesn't throw fastballs. His slider and curve are nice pitches, and he gets whiffs on them, but he only offers his 89 mph "heater" about 35 percent of the time. You can surprise unsuspecting hitters with a bender-vender in short, sporadic appearances, but in multiple printings Storey gives hitters too much time to guess the ending. The Blue Jays' deep bullpen—even in a year of widespread pitcher meltdown—required his services for only three games. He's a natural fit for a team of market-misfits like the A's, but oops—the A's drafted him in 2008 and dealt him to the Astros three years later. He's not likely to stick in Toronto for long, either.
2013 The Neverending Storey: Claimed by Toronto—after being claimed by Houston—after being claimed by the Yankees . . . from Houston. The reliever’s strikeout rate doesn’t look like it belongs to a righty whose fastball barely topped 90 and was crushed to the tune of a .343 TAv, but it’s the off-speed stuff that makes him interesting: 28 of his 34 Ks came on his slider and slow curve, which he commands well. As a free-talent pickup, he’s promising, but if hitters learn to let the slow stuff go by and feast on his fastball, Storey’s next chapter might make his team want to turn the page.
2010 Pitching across four levels, Mickey Storey struck out more than 12 per nine with a 1.22 ERA, but he depends more of location and deception than raw stuff.

2014-04-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you make of some of the ridiculous roster decisions Alex Anthopolous has made of late. The Blue Jays recently lost Marcus Walden and Kenny Wilson on waivers. Walden was added to the 40 man for a few days and onto the 25 man, never got into a game, then was DFA to get Kawasaki on the 40 man roster, was claimed almost immediately. Wilson was DFA'd to acquire Darin Mastroianni off waivers, and was claimed almost immediately. Then today the club released Mickey Storey who they had been sheltering on the 40 man for over a year with one call-up. Walden and Wilson aren't stars, but losing an asset for no reason is just atrocious. Is this not one of the worst cases of asset management ever, or at least recently?
(Steve McEwen from Canada)
The Walden move wasn't a good look. Realistically, none of those guys are going to burn the Jays. (I was surprised Wilson was claimed. He's fast but that's about it at this point.) But you're right that some of their roster juggling has been odd. The only thing I can think of is maybe something arose with Storey in the past week that prompted the release. Otherwise, it's hard to explain. (R.J. Anderson)
