BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2015 Minor-league hot potato Daniel Schlereth found himself back in Toledo in his endless search for the fabled strike zone. He's getting warmer!
2013 Schlereth was once considered the closer of the future for Arizona, but after three disappointing years for Detroit, he has moved on to the Orioles hoping to fulfill his promise. He has good stuff, with a 93-mph fastball (though that velocity has been on the decline) and a curveball that can miss some bats, but his control is so poor as to render him ineffective. He is reaching an age where gains in this department become increasingly unlikely, so unless he can do a 180 and fast, he'll be organizational depth.
2012 Schlereth is a former first round pick with closer-level stuff that has yet to translate into big league dominance. He has good velocity for a southpaw, with a fastball that sits comfortably in the low-90s and a plus curve, but his control is often reminiscent of Raoul Duke on an ether bender. Rare indeed is the reliever who can thrive while walking nearly six men per nine innings, no matter how impressive their strikeout rate. Schlereth will break camp as the 'penís second lefty behind Phil Coke, but if he can develop any concept of the strike zone, he has the potential to move up the bullpen pecking order.
2011 When you watch Schlereth overpower hitters with his plus fastball and baffling curve, itís easy to envision him as a late-inning beast. There is still work to be done, as the continued reduction of his once-stratospheric walk rate will determine whether he becomes a premium closer or something less, but as long as he continues to pile up the strikeouts heíll be working high-leverage situations. With Jose Valverde again on hand to work the ninth, Schlereth and Ryan Perry will spend the year jockeying to be his inevitable replacement.
2010 One of the prized possessions of the farm system, the former first-round pick broke into the bigs as a southpaw specialist when Scott Schoeneweis went out of action. The son of the NFL analyst, Schlereth was stingy with hits but was unsustainably wild. This was also a problem during his brief minor-league apprenticeship, where he posted amazing strikeout numbers (60 in 39 2/3 innings), but also had trouble throwing strikes (23 walks). Fortunately, he's well short of Brad Pennington territory as far as wildness, and his fastball, which reached 96-98 mph in the minors, showed up. Too many control-free days will limit Schlereth to a relief role, but he could flourish in the bullpen with his skill set and repertoire.
2009 Schlereth became Arizona's closer of the future the moment they used their first-round pick on him last June. He's a left-hander who can touch 97 mph, and he backs it up with a hard curve; he had no problems carving up minor league hitters. The son of a former NFL player, he brings a football mentality to the mound and is aggressive as it gets. The only knock against him is that he's a health risk, as his is a violent delivery and he's already had a Tommy John surgery.

2010-05-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)How's Daniel Schlereth been faring this season? Does he still have that plus-plus lefty velocity? Do you think he'll be a major league closer down the road?

It's been a mixed bag. He's still bringing plenty of velo and missing a ton of bats, but his control has went backwards and he's issuing far too many walks. He needs to straighten that out before he gets to ride the nice planes and stay in the nice hotels. (Kevin Goldstein)

2009-06-09 14:30:002009 Draft CoverageYankees really liked Daniel Schlereth last year and like Brothers this year, a similar type of arm. They also have been heavily tied to Heathcott, as KG pegged in the mock, and California OF Brett Jackson. I'd expect Stassi to BOS and Heathcott to NYY. Either team could peg Brothers, though.
