BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2017 In some ways, MLB players are still treated like chattel, and it's wrong. It's wrong that Olmos, a pitcher with a spotty minor-league track record but plenty of promise, was wanted by multiple teams in need of left-handed relief depth in the winter of 2015-16, but was doomed by the league's roster rules to bounce among them without self-determination or any ability to leverage that wantedness into more money. Instead, he was designated for assignment four times, eventually stashed at Triple-A by Baltimore, and then dropped into free agency without big-league innings on his 2016 resume. This could be the year he provides crucial situational help in a big-league bullpen, but he'll do it on a minor-league deal.
2016 Control has always been Edgar Olmos' problem; last year it control improved while his strikeouts plummeted, so at least his struggles have some variety. As a left-handed pitcher, he will keep getting chances.
2014 A hard-throwing portsider, Edgar Olmos continues to have a lot of trouble figuring out where it's going and he ended the season getting lit up in the Arizona Fall League; he'll continue to get opportunities to figure it out in the bullpen.
2013 The Marlins tried to brighten Olmos’s dimming prospect bulb by converting him into a reliever, but the southpaw’s control issues followed him to the bullpen. Olmos still features the live, projectable arm that once put him in the conversation with the organization’s best pitching prospects, but he turns 23 in April, and hopes for a breakthrough wane with each passing year.
2012 Lefty Edgar Olmos struggled to repeat his delivery, a common challenge for young, tall pitchers, and led the Florida State League in just about everything a pitcher doesn't want to lead a league in: losses, runs, earned runs, walks, WHIP.
2011 After missing most of '09 with shoulder surgery, Edgar Olmos finally got to stand and deliver a broad assortment of off-speed offerings, but with mixed results.

PITCHf/x Pitcher Profile

A Collaboration between BrooksBaseball.net and Baseball Prospectus - Pitch classifications provided by Pitch Info LLC
