DateQuestionAnswer
2017-09-29 12:00:00 (link to chat)Is Brandon Nimmo kind of really interesting?
(Geoff from Denver)
I am getting a lot of Nimmo questions recently, both on twitter and the pod. I think this good outcome here is a useful role 45, platoon/fourth outfielder that won't kill you when pressed into starting. He is striking out 30% of the time and has a .554 OPS against lefties. That's not really a medium term starter without more game power than he has shown throughout his career. There is still some downside risk that without his shiny .380 BABIP he turns into Kirk Nieuwenhuis. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2016-02-25 12:00:00 (link to chat)I had a chance to see some Jeff McNeil in Arizona and in AA, what does his profile look like? Looks like he could have a solid golf career if baseball doesn't work out
(Jeffrey from Long Beach, CA)
"Jeff McNeil played golf in college" will be the new "Kirk Nieuwenhuis played football in high school" for Mets fans. Assuming he gets to the majors. McNeil is an interesting one. He is a good athlete, easy plus run, isn't bad at shortstop, could play third, second and some corner OF too. Swing is nice from the left side. The baseball skills are still raw for his age though (he will be 24 in April), and the swing falls apart against lefties. It's an intriguing utility profile, but rawer than you'd expect from a college guy. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2016-01-14 20:00:00 (link to chat)What is your projection for Domingo Santana? I know many are concerned about his Zone Contact rates, but this is a guy that raked in the minors, and his profile seems somewhat similar to George Springer and even Kris Bryant who both have Zone Contact Rate concerns.
(holmesp2001 from St. Louis)
Probably a low batting average (.230) with a lot of home runs. George Springer's rookie year minus the hot start is probably a solid comp. I do wonder if they'll platoon Kirk Nieuwenhuis with Santana early to ease Santana into the role. (Mike Gianella)
2010-08-20 15:30:00 (link to chat)Will either Fernando Martinez or Kirk Nieuwenhuis be an impact player for the Mets outfield within the next several years?
(kernan from Ogden)
Well, I'm bothered by the term impact. Maybe we have different definitions. I think they both could be every day players, and good ones, but is that impact? Take any team, even a first place one, and count the impact guys. I like those two -- but I don't think they'll be impact guys. (Kevin Goldstein)
