2016-04-21 19:00:00 (link to chat)How is it possible for the Angels to be putting this horrible of a roster out there despite having a $140 million payroll and emptying out the last of their farm system for Simmons?
(Kristen from Canada)
$140 million isn't really a lot in this day and age, and they have such big chunks invested in players like Albert Pujols, who is still solid but not the superstar he was, and C.J. Wilson on the DL. They simply couldn't spend anything this winter on even marginal upgrades like Howie Kendrick over Johnny Giavotella and it shows on the active roster. They overpaid for Andrelton Simmons but even before that trade their farm system was just so bad. They are at the end of a success cycle that didn't offer a lot of success and likely have to consider rebuilding if they can't spend more money. (Mike Gianella)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Johnny Giavotella, whatsa matta you?
(RotoLando from Cloud City)
Poor Johnny, I just don't think it's ever going to work in KC. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-05-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Here's a scenario I've seen before: Chris Getz has a .250 OBP, Elliot Johnson .240. Johnny Giavotella is slashing .326/.396/.489. What gives? And if the Royals don't want him, can my team have him?
(Dan from NYC)
I somewhat share your frustration, but I've cooled on Giavotella over the last year. He's had a legit shot to grab the Royals' 2B job in spring training each of the last two years, and he hasn't been able to do it with very iffy performances in the spring. He's now in his third year of raking at Triple-A, but he didn't really perform in 50-plus games in MLB last season. I do think he deserves more of a shot given how weak KC is at the position, but I'm less confident on him being a passable everyday 2B now. With that said, it is a weird situation. You'd think he would've gotten more of a chance by now. (Jason Cole)
2012-07-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Derek- which rookies currently in the minors do you see having the biggest impact this season? Any do you see any of them as upgrades from say Cameron Maybin or Ted Lilly (bottom of my roster)? Thanks
(DanDaMan from SeaCliff)
At this point, it's pretty much all about opportunity. The Trouts and Harpers of the world are already here, and now it becomes a waiting game for a lot of guys. With Tabata getting demoted, that time could be now for a guy like Starling Marte. Some other names to consider: Wil Myers, Ryan Lavarnway (if traded out of Boston), Danny Hultzen, Jake Odorizzi, Jedd Gyorko, Johnny Giavotella, Mike Olt, Travis Snider. It's a gamble dropping an established big leaguer for one of those guys, but in a shallower league where they're just bench players anyway, gambling on some upside isn't a bad idea. (Derek Carty)
2012-05-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Name a handful of current bench players you see carving out a role and producing fantasy worthy numbers?
(Ridin'thepine from Splintersville)
Obviously things would have to break right for each of these guys, but here goes: Jeff Keppinger, Kosuke Fukudome, Brent Lillibridge, Tyler Flowers, Johnny Giavotella, Dave Ross, Juan Francisco, Tyler Moore, Adrian Cardenas, Chris Snyder, Allen Craig, Wilin Rosario, Nate Schierholtz (Derek Carty)
2011-12-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)What would you estimate for the number of times out of 100 the threesome of Dee Gordon, Jemile Weeks, and Jose Altuve has more productive careers than the threesome of Ruben Tejada, Johnny Giavotella, and Kyle Seager?
(goiter6 from MN)
98. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-06-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Derek. Callups such as Moustakas and Ackley have recently deposed primary starters for teams. Which other current players do you see as short-timers in their starting line-up? One specific Q: Johnny Gia for Getz anytime soon? Thanks...
(LoyalRoyal from LV, KS)
I think we'll see Johnny Giavotella this season, but the Royals may look to extract some value via trade out of a guy like Getz beforehand. Other guys to look for in the near-term include Trayvon Robinson, Jason Kipnis, and Dayan Viciedo. There's talk Wily Mo Pena will get the call this week to DH and could force himself into the OF picture in Arizona if he hits. (Derek Carty)
