2018 When a big-league catcher goes down and the Triple-A reserve is ordered overnight, Tim Federowicz (aka FedEx) lives to deliver.
2017 Tim Federowicz is entering his sixth season as a backup catcher in the major leagues. Get to know him now: he’ll probably get you a good discount on the Chevy Camaros he’ll be selling in a few years.
2015 Rafa Nadal's got an argument but needs a few more years of longevity, Pete Sampras was terrible at Roland Garros, Bjorn Borg quit too soon and it's just too difficult to compare Rod Laver to modern players. They're all great, but Tim Federowicz remains the best of all time.
2014 “FedEx” was shipped back and forth between Albuquerque and Los Angeles absolutely, positively anytime during the first two months of the season. He made the 800-mile trek on six different occasions before the end of May, but was installed as the permanent backup catcher after Ramon Hernandez was sidelined in June. Federowicz presents a different value proposition than the man he replaced, despite the mirage created by his laying waste to the PCL in hitter-friendly stomping grounds. He's renowned more for his work with leather, not lumber.
2013 When Federowicz was acquired from Boston in a three-way deal at the 2011 trading deadline—the one that sent Trayvon Robinson to Seattle—Ned Colletti's stated intention was to pair him with A.J. Ellis in 2012 as part of a cheap catching tandem. Instead, "FedEx" spent virtually the entire season at Albuquerque as Ellis broke out. Defense is Federowicz's calling card, and he improved at blocking the ball while gunning down 39 percent of stolen-base attempts. With Ellis having grabbed the starting job, the Dodgers can either let FedEx serve as the understudy in the bigs or keep him in Triple-A, overnighting him to the majors if the need arises.
2012 Colletti's concern about the system's depth at catcher led him to surrender Trayvon Robinson in a three-way deadline deal for this seventh-round 2008 pick. The consensus was that he overreached, surrendering a top prospect who profiles as an everyday outfielder for a backstop who may be just backup material. Federowicz put a pretty face on the immediate aftermath of the deal because like all carbon-based life forms he hit at high-altitude Albuquerque en route to a brief taste of the majors. Colletti's stated intention to have him share the big-league job with A.J. Ellis in 2012 will provide a truer picture of what the Dodgers have. Federowicz is a catch-and-throw type who gets high marks for his intelligence, game-calling, and receiving ability. Offensively, he has gap power and will take the occasional walk. While not tremendously exciting, he could turn out to be a modest asset if he fulfills his potential.
2010 A seventh-round pick in the 2008 draft out of the University of North Carolina, Federowicz crushed in the Sally League in his first full-length professional season before running ashore in High-A. The trouble is that a 21-year-old from a top college program is supposed to crush in the Sally League. In a system filled with future backup catchers, Federowicz could distinguish himself with a strong repeat of High-A this year, but he could also get lost in the shuffle rather quickly should he struggle again.
