2016-04-14 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Are you bullish any of these young platoon outfielders become complete players in the next 2 years? Aaron Hicks, Trayce Thompson, Anthony Gose, Adam Duvall, Avisail Garcia, Tyler Naquin? (Yes Cheese from Yep) | Absolutely no, never, not gonna happen on Avisail Garcia. I don't think he turns into anything. I'd be surprised if Trayce Thompson turns into a decent everyday player at the MLB level, too. I think Gose is a platoon player, although he's on the good side of the platoon and plays excellent defense, so he could get a little more playing time by virtue of his defense. I don't think Adam Duval will ever be a legit starter on a decent team. Naquin could get more run than most players with his offensive profile due to his glove and the lack of options in CF in Cleveland for the time being. I like Hicks, though. I'm not sure Hicks will ever be a complete player, but he's the best bet of this group. The twins really jerked him around, though, and it hurt his development, maybe irreparably. His glove and arm will give him a lot more chances to figure it out than most outfielders, though. (Scooter Hotz) |
2015-01-05 15:00:00 (link to chat) | Does Dalton Pompey secure and keep the CF job in Toronto this year? I guess a "yes" means he swipes 30 bags and hits for decent average, right?
Separately, does Anthony Gose find any success in Detroit? (Crawdads from Reno, NV) | He ought to. With Gose and Rasmus gone, there's not much to block him. That's not to say he wouldn't have been the best option anyway, but that would have given them justification for sending him back to the minors. He flew through their system this year, but he earned it every step of the way. He looked great in the AFL too. I think he's going to be quite good, and the Blue Jays are clearly in win-now mode and he's going to be their best option. 30 steals is probably a bit aggressive, but 20 is doable. (Jeff Moore) |
2014-12-11 18:00:00 (link to chat) | Since the acquisition of Cespedes how do you see the Tigers' outfield shaping up? Who will start where? (dvanhait from Holland) | Cespedes and JD Martinez will see most of the time on the corners, and I expect Rajai Davis and Anthony Gose to split time in center field. There's a lot of risk around Martinez, who could still be a bit of a flash in the pan, and both Gose and Davis need platoon partners, meaning there should be plenty of at-bats to go around for all three players. (Mark Anderson) |
2014-11-04 18:00:00 (link to chat) | John Gibbons said yesterday that, if the Blue Jays roster remained unchanged between now and the start of the season, he'd love to see Dalton Pompey out there in CF. Let's assume that only one OF is signed to replace Colby Rasmus and Melky Cabrera (assuming he doesn't return): is there any realistic chance of Pompey making the Opening Day roster and playing CF/LF ahead of both Anthony Gose and Kevin Pillar? (Nick from London, UK) | There's absolutely a chance of that. Pompey impressed a ton this year and the offensive/defensive potential projects to play in a big way at the MLB level. He's got the all-around skills to be a far better player than Gose or Pillar, and if he shows even reasonably well in spring training, he could walk away with the Opening Day job and never look back. Pompey's real....very real and he's going to be a factor in Toronto sooner than people realize. (Mark Anderson) |
2014-07-22 15:00:00 (link to chat) | Who are the top performers for the lugnuts this year? And what is your take on DJ Davis? He was expected to be a project, but the bat is scary light so far. Thanks! (LouBro from N.B Canada) | DJ Davis was even more unimpressive than the numbers suggest. Quite lost at the plate. No plan of attack. Long. Plate disc issues, approach issues, doesn't barrel much. Definitely can run, but no baserunning instincts to speak of. Glides in CF, and should remain there. He's a long shot to become Anthony Gose, so that about sums it up. (Jordan Gorosh) |
2014-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey Jordan, i was combing through some minor league stats this morning, i was very surprised to see D.J. Davis has only 7 stolen bases on the season. I know he has really struggled with the bat but this seems very low for someone that is supposed to have 70+ speed. Have you seen or heard anything on Davis this season? (Nick from Windsor) | I have actually seen Davis in person, and came away even more underwhelmed than other's reports indicate. He had virtually no approach at the plate, and poor awareness on the basepaths. His routes were decent in CF, although having big time speed doesn't hurt. I wouldn't bet on the tools actualizing in his particular case. I'd take Anthony Gose over him, who I don't think will ever hit, and that's not saying much. (Jordan Gorosh) |
2014-03-24 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Do you think Anthony Gose gets regular playing time sometime this year? (Justin from Chicago, IL) | Not unless Melky flops. (Paul Sporer) |
2013-11-25 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Where would you rate the Blue Jays farm system? Also, what is Anthony Gose's realistic role? Thanks. (David from Montreal) | Jays list coming up next week at BP. I think Gose can be a major league regular; a frustrating player that flashes a lot more potential than he lives up to. (Jason Parks) |
2013-04-23 13:00:00 (link to chat) | After some underwhelming performances by current starters, do you see players like Avasail Garcia, who's ready to start a rehab assignment, or Anthony Gose carving out a significant role this season? Who are your favorite "waitin' in the wings for an opportunity" players currently? Thanks... (LoyalRoyal from Kansas) | Sorry to say that Wil Myers tops the list as he finishes out his sentence in service time prison.
In the NL, I've heard good things on the outfielder the Phillies have come up the pipeline in A ball. I think this Delmon Young kid could do some things if only given the chance. (Zachary Levine) |
2012-12-28 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Hi Geoff, with all of Toronto's moves this winter, how much (if any) what do you think 2013 holds in store for Anthony Gose?
Thanks. (Greg from Chicago) | Hi Greg, thanks for the question. The Blue Jays are going for it now. Gose can't hit. I'm not seeing an obvious role for him in Toronto. (Geoff Young) |
2012-12-13 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Who is the best pitcher in the Majors who is not a pitcher? I wonder this whenever I hear a position player has a ++ arm. (Hightower from Dallas) | Eric Hosmer could be a beast on the mound, as could Anthony Gose. (Jason Parks) |
2012-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Who is a good MLB comp for Anthony Gose? (Ace from Montreal) | Devon White. (Kevin Goldstein) |
2012-01-26 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Does Anthony Gose's hit tool have enough #want to afford him the opportunity to showcase those tools as a major league regular? (C.J. from Milwaukee) | It needs to improve, but it only needs to find average utility for the speed/power to elevate his offensive profile. If the hit tool finds a way to play at the major league level, Gose could be an all-star. (Jason Parks) |
2012-01-26 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Does Anthony Gose's hit tool have enough #want to afford him the opportunity to showcase those tools as a major league regular? 2011-12-14 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Anthony Gose and Gary Brown have similar tools, but clearly have different approaches at the plate. Which do you see being more successful in the short & long term? BTW, you described Billy Hamilton as "sexy" in the podcast; I really think it should have been "sex on fire." (Teddy from Cuba) | Brown now and in the future. Not sure Gose can figure it out. You are right: it should have been sex on fire. I agree 100% (Jason Parks) |
2011-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Brr. I'm cold. Anthony Gose isn't. Where is his floor/ceiling/realistic projection? (Dawson from Igloo, Canada) | That's the thing about Gose. His ceiling is huge. He has some power, crazy speed, incredible arm strength, just so much. But right now, the bat is a huge problem because of all the swing and miss. He could be a star, and could get stuck as a fourth outfielder. (Kevin Goldstein) |
2011-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Re: Anthony Gose - is there any history to go by for the likelihood that prospects like him - who, while he was still young for his level this year, isn't THAT young - figuring out the hit tool? (Bret from Toronto) | No. Some guys click, some guys don't, and if you can figure out the difference, I know people who will pay you a lot of money. (Kevin Goldstein) |
2011-09-06 14:00:00 (link to chat) | How far away from sticking in the majors are Travis d'Arnaud and Anthony Gose? And how do you see them performing? (thresh50 from boston) | I'm not Kevin Goldstein, damn it. I'm current events and history, not prospects. I do Goose, not Gose (Goslin or Gossage). But if you're asking me, I'd still like to see Goser the Gosarian get a better handle on the ol' making contact thing. At 20, no reason he has to do that tomorrow, but when you start carving points off of a .250 average upon promotion, you don't end up with a whole lot left for the majors. Again, he's precocious, so it might not be terminal... Bobby Fuller, "I Fought the Law" on now. There's probably a movie in the strange death of Bobby Fuller... (Steven Goldman) |
2011-09-02 14:00:00 (link to chat) | I hear a lot of talk about how Anthony Gose needs to learn "how to hit." He certainly has a low batting average, but essentially every other number is quite nice. Could he develop to put up a similar line - .250 average, .350 OBP, 15 HR, 60SB - in the majors? If he can, with his defense (from what I've read), that's a hell of a player. (Paul from Waterloo) | The only assumption I don't like is the .350 OBP. If he hits .250 in the big leagues, I can't see him putting up a .350 OBP. MLB pitchers are worlds better than Double-A ones control and command wise. (Kevin Goldstein) |
2011-06-27 14:00:00 (link to chat) | How do you see Anthony Gose' bat progressing (Zach from Toronto) | I don't. Still has huge contact issues. Speed and defense alone will get him to the big leagues, but I'm not sure he'll ever hit. (Kevin Goldstein) |
