2016-06-09 19:00:00 (link to chat) | What team is the worst at developing pitchers? The Indians system has a lot of hype, but the pitchers they have taken in the top 90 since 2002 have combined for only 3.2 WAR in an Indians uniform (excluding the 6.1 WAR they got from trading Pomeranz/White for Ubaldo). The list is depressing: Jeremy Guthrie, Brian Solcum, Adam Miller, Jeremy Sowers, Justin Hoyman, Scott Lewis, David Huff, Steven Wright (traded for Lars Anderson), Trey Haley, Alex White, Drew Pomeranz, Dillon Howard, Mitch Brown, Dace Kime...are you as depressed as I am yet? No? How about the fact only Sowers and Huff had at least 1 career WAR for the Indians, making them probably the 2nd or 3rd best in a group of 14 picks. (Truganini from CO) | I wouldn't say there are specific teams that you know are bad at developing pitchers but there are some concerns. Seeems like Baltimore has had some recent bad luck with Dylan Bundy, Hunter Harvey, and Kevin Gausman just to name a few. Obviously Colorado has had its own troubles with Tyler Anderson, Tyler Matzek, Mike Nikorak (at least right now), Drew Pomeranz, Christian Friedrich, and Peter Tago. -SG (Live Draft Chat) |
2016-06-09 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Do the Rockies still have a reputation of only drafting a certain... "type" of player or has that not been true for a while? (Infrancoeurgible from Down and Away ) | I could argue in 2015 that they were in the drivers seat, they were going to be happy with whichever SS they got.
Before that they've tried polished college arms (Christian Friedrich, Eddie Butler, Tyler Anderson, Jon Gray), projectable HS arms (Peter Tago, Tyler Matzek, Ryan Castellani, Ryan Warner) with more misses than hits. So I don't think they have a reputation of drafting just certain types of players. -Steve Givarz (Live Draft Chat) |
2014-06-05 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Seriously, the Rockies since 2008 have drafted in the first round Rex Brothers, Christian Friedrich, Tyler Anderson and now Kyle Freeland. All Collee LHP, is this a theme of taking these low-ceiling players? (Wesley from Utah) | I wouldn't call Freeland low-ceiling. Has legit plus stuff and fills up the zone with it. Good performance arm with the scouting card to back it up.
Have to step away for about 20 mins on a couple of calls. Be back... (Draft Day Chat with Nick J. Faleris) |
2012-05-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What do we make of Christian Friedrich going forward? Obviously the early returns are outliers, but what level does he settle in at? And how do you anticipate his style of pitching will play in Coors? (rapid eye movement from springfield) | Friedrich has had some great matchups thus far, inflating his numbers, but he is an intriguing play going forward. He reportedly worked with Cliff Lee about making his motion more repeatable this off-season, (in addition to soliciting advice from Jamie Moyer and Mike Hampton), and it appears it has helped his control. He also has interesting stuff. There's little horizontal component to his game, but he gets tons of vertical separation with his pitches, forcing hitters to change their eye level. His 92-mph fastball rises a foot, and his 12-to-6 curve breaks close to a foot. He throws a sharp slider in between and a show-me change. The only problem is that he'll be flyball pitcher (especially if he keeps throwing his fastball 65 percent of the time), which isn't great for Coors. Overall, I think Friedrich has a solid chances to succeed, especially if you can pick and choose his match-ups. (Derek Carty) |
2011-06-21 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Thanks for the chat, Derek. Do you think Mike Leake is worth trading a solid pitching prospect like Christian Friedrich for in a dynasty league? (The only pitching categories are IP and runs allowed.) How do you think Leake will fare the next few years? (DS from LA) | It depends a bit on the specifics of your league and how keeping players works. Also, how risk-averse you are. In a vacuum, I'm probably doing that deal. I like Leake a lot, even if he'll likely never be a true ace. Still, I really like his stuff and what he brings to the table. He's a guy who will strikeout an above average number of batters with good control and lots of groundballs. Think maybe a Brandon Webb (in terms of final numbers, not necessarily stuff) with fewer groundballs, so maybe a mid-3.00s ERA instead of a low-3.00s ERA. That's valuable, and probably something I would trade a guy like Friedrich for. He's far from a sure thing. (Derek Carty) |
2011-04-13 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Christian Friedrich or Justin Smoak? (Adam J. Morris from H-Town) | Smoak. (Jason Parks) |
No BP Roundtables have mentioned this guy.
A Collaboration between BrooksBaseball.net and Baseball Prospectus - Pitch classifications provided by Pitch Info LLC
Although he has not thrown an MLB pitch in 2024, Christian Friedrich threw 5,087 pitches that were tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2012 and 2021, all of them occuring in Spring Training. In 2021, he relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (88mph) and Slider (82mph), also mixing in a Curve (75mph).
