2014-05-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Seriously, what's the big deal about this Billy Hamilton kid? I know he's fast, but I'm fast, hit for better average and more power. How big of a difference is there from a fantasy perspective?
(Rajai Davis from Toronto)
Substantial. I love you, Rajai, but your full-time role is in the balance with JD Martinez surging and Andy Dirks eventually returning. Meanwhile, Hamilton can flat out win the SB category for a team. That said, you DEFINITELY hold a MAJOR edge in production-to-cost ratio. But in a vacuum where draft costs don't matter, I still lean Hamilton quite easily. (Paul Sporer)
2014-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Matt Joyce and Andy Dirks were benched during the play-offs last year. Are they washed up or were they just in a temporary funk?
(hotstatrat from Toronto, O.)
I don't think they're washed. Same with Daniel Nava. Each is a useful player; they were just caught in bad spells at the wrong time. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's the best care scenario (production, playing time, etc.) for Castellanos in 2014? Do you see him as trade bait this off season?
(Paul from Lansing)
I think you'll see him spend a lot of time roaming left field for the Tigers next year. I don't think he's going to be the everyday guy because I think they will still run Andy Dirks out there a fair amount, but he should get at least 50% of the playing time over the course of the season. He's required time to adjust to every level (well, except for High-A) and I expect the same in the big leagues, but once he gets rolling, I think he'll hit a lot and the power will slowly start to show. (Mark Anderson)
2013-07-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's up with Nick Castellanos? Hard to imagine Andy Dirks is blocking him, so I have to think they're thinking about trading him and want to leave him in the minors to preserve his value. What do you think?
(James from Detroit)
Sometimes I think the Tigers' idea of chemistry is making sure the left fielder sucks. I don't know why that would work, but they have access to information I don't! (Sam Miller)
2013-06-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Nick Castellanos has 2 more hits today through six innings at AAA Toledo. When do Tigers fans get to stop suffering through Andy Dirks at bats in favor of their top prospect?
(Jim from Detroit)
If Dirks doesn't heat up, I could see the move being made within a couple of weeks. That said, sweeping the Indians to gain some breathing room might allow the Tigers to give Castellanos a bit more seasoning. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-05-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)Speaking of Avisail Garcia, who do you think gets the call to the majors first, Garcia or Nick Castellanos? Will Detroit wait for an injury, or just promote one of them when they think they're ready?
(Jon from Detroit)
Castellanos is scuffling a bit at the higher levels, and his breakout at Lakeland is drifting further into the rearview mirror. The MLB roster is pretty loaded and the Tigers sit in a weak division, but Andy Dirks is not blocking anybody in LF. I say that Garcia gets there first, but that Castellanos wins the job once he is ready. A competitive team like Detroit has less incentive to play games with the arb clock, but in this case the promotion will be tied to performance. Castellanos has to earn his role. (Doug Thorburn)
2013-01-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Andy Dirks good enough to hold down the LF spot in Detroit or will we see Garcia or Castellanos take over for him?
(Nick from Phoenix)
Thanks for the question, Nick.

I like Andy Dirks as a part-time player, but am skeptical that he'll continue to do enough damage against left-handed pitching to warrant an everyday role. So, yes, I do think that he's an adequate option for the lion's share of at-bats, but that should leave plenty of openings for Garcia (or another right-handed-hitting outfielder) to contribute at that position. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-01-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Now that Detroit has blown a gigantic wad on Prince Fielder, are they going to rely on Jacob Turner as their 5th starter? I don't see anyone else decent who is around to back him up. . . And, if Cabrera is really going to play 3B and Raburn 2B, who will DH? Is Andy Dirks a leading LF option with Delmon Young DHing?
(hotstatrat from Daydreamland)
They'll fall back on Adam Wilk or Duane Below if Turner isn't ready right off... Dirks should get a lot of time in left field, assuming Leyland doesn't develop an unhealthy Clete Thomas fixation. (Steven Goldman)
