2014 Olmsted was Milwaukee's rehabilitation project in 2013. Despite never throwing a pitch in the major leagues, the Brewers gave him a major-league contract in hopes Olmsted's 6-foot-6, 270-pound frame and mid-90s fastball could turn him into a major league reliever. Instead, he was one of Milwaukee's final cuts off the spring roster and he proceeded to struggle through his worst professional season at Triple-A. His walk rate was double his previous career worst. Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said he was impressed with Olmsted's stuff and deception in spring training, but none of that will be worth anything unless he can reacquaint himself with the strike zone. Time is running out, as Olmsted turns 27 in May.
2013 A massive right-hander with mid-90s heat and a wipeout slider, Olmsted has resurrected his career after Tommy John surgery, a stint in the Japanese minor leagues, and months kicking around California backlots before Boston gave him a second chance. Since making his way back onto the map, Olmsted's walk-to-strikeout ratio has been off the charts, and when the Red Sox couldn’t find a place for him on the 40-man roster last fall, the Brewers swooped in and signed him. His Gossage-like mound presence and unflappable demeanor can only help him, and if he can work the same tricks against Triple-A hitters this year, Milwaukee may have found another power arm to help cure its bullpen woes.
