2013 A prototypical third catcher, Martinez waits at the end of a team’s 40-man roster as insurance. While he wields plus arm strength from behind the plate, he’s a pedestrian receiver and an average overall defender. Martinez also provides little with the bat. With one option remaining, the 27-year-old backstop is an up-and-down player who could see time in Arlington this season if the Rangers’ thin catching corps falters.
2012 Martinez is a catch-and-throw guy with marginal on-base ability and zero power. The Padres liked the way he works with pitchers, which is useful for someone who may or may not represent an upgrade offensively at the plate. Martinez has a decent arm, having nabbed 33 percent of runners who have tried to steal against him in five minor-league seasons. His skill set is that of a career backup catcher and the Rangers, who carried three catchers on their World Series roster, acquired him for depth at the position. He has options so could be moved back and forth between the big club and Triple-A.
2011 Luis Martinez's approach at the plate works (11-percent walk rate against a 14-percent punchout rate), but he lacks power. He has thrown out 34 percent of attempted base thieves in his four years in the minors, including 31 percent at San Antonio in 2010, which makes him a worthy Triple-A catcher with potential as a major-league backup.
