2016 Efren Navarro has been sheltered from southpaws in 85 percent of his plate appearances, but such a usage pattern may be unnecessary, as he has shown himself equally inept against pitchers from both sides.
2015 The ever-so-minor downside of Pujols remaining relatively healthy in 2014 was that it denied Halos fans the pleasure of watching Navarro, longstanding organizational soldier, field his natural position. At his defensive peak, Navarro surfaced repeatedly as an outlier in multiple defensive metrics—one industry member even referred to him as breaking the system—and won the Rawlings Minor League gold glove in 2011. His Angels' slash line was underwhelming, but solid minor-league peripherals, including a 26 percent line-drive rate, translated well to the majors, so he might hit enough in 2015 to maintain his spot on a big-league roster.
2014 Navarro might have been the worlds best defensive first baseman in 2011 and 2012, but sadly, thats not enough to earn a big-league job when you hit like a middle infielder. He hit a little better than that last year, so the Halos added him to the 40-man roster rather than lose him to minor-league free agency, but its unclear where hell see playing time, either in Anaheim or Salt Lake.
2012 If Jamie Moyer is the comp-of-death for soft-tossing minor league lefties, Mark Grace is the hysterically optimistic comp for slick-fielding, powerless first basemen. Mike Scisocia evoked Grace when Navarro started hot in the Cactus League, and as far as his defensehe won the PCL's Gold Glove at the positionand contact skills, sure, one can sort of see it after a few beers. But few with that skill set ever hit enough to carry the position, and even Navarro's breakout season in Salt Lake was unimpressive in a league where entire teams were slugging .490. He's buried behind Kendrys Morales and Mark Trumbo on the depth chart, but a September call-up joined him with Buster Posey, David Murphy, and Anthony Chavez0.93 ERA in 10 career inningsas the Angels' only 50th-round picks to qualify for a big-league pension.
