2018 The most notable thing Wright did in 2017 was undergo the same knee surgery Dustin Pedroia ended up needing, only in May instead of October. Unlike Pedroia, Wright should be ready for the start of the season, but also unlike Pedroia, few people seem to care. How quickly we forget that Wright was an All-Star in 2016, posting a 2.18 ERA through his first 15 starts that year. Of course, how quickly we forgot back then that Wright had been pretty nondescript as a starter up until his random breakout. The Red Sox don’t have a ton of sure things in their rotation behind Chris Sale, so Wright could get another shot to stick as a starter. He’s about as lucky as pre-Season 7 Garry Gergich though, so don’t hold your breath.
2017 Through June, Wright was one of the best pitchers in the game. In 15 starts he posted a 2.18 ERA and held batters to a .207/.289/.290 line, all while throwing his knuckleball 70 percent of the time. That performance made Wright one of 2016’s most surprising All-Stars, but—like a five-year high school quarterback or Pokemon Go—Wright peaked too soon. In his nine July and August starts, he allowed a 5.53 ERA and admitted to struggling when it got too hot. He also struggles when it rains and when it’s humid, which means Wright...can’t really pitch outside in the summer? Seems less than ideal for a baseball player. Nonetheless, he was robbed of a chance at autumn redemption after injuring his shoulder while diving back to the bag as a pinch-runner in August. The heir apparent to Tim Wakefield certainly deserves a chance to start again next season, though we suspect his baserunning days are over.
2016 Predicting pitcher performance is a precarious endeavor to begin with. Add a knuckleball into the equation—a pitch that Wright throws nearly 90 percent of the time—and you're basically left with guesswork. That's why it's difficult to say that Wright exceeded expectations last season—none existed to begin with—and yet his 70-plus innings of quality baseball-throwing are notable nonetheless. He probably would've kept logging innings, too, but he was shelved in early August after being struck just below the head by an errant flyball while running sprints. As Wright's comedic counterpart would tell you, that just goes to prove that working out is a pain in the neck.
2015 Much as there must always be a Stark in Winterfell, there must always be a knuckleballer in Boston ... or at least in Pawtucket. Steven Wright held the throne last season, and will keep providing Quad-A depth moving forward.
2014 Trying to guess a knuckleballer's future is pointless. It's the one style of pitch and pitcher where major-league results are all that matter. In Wright's case, he showed a lot of potentialwhenever Ryan Lavarnway wasn't setting passed balls records and extending innings, anywayor at least enough to justify his 40-man presence. The Sox could be forgiven if they kept him in the loaded Pawtucket rotation and pushed someone else to relief because, while you can't predict what a knuckler is going to be, the upside is obvious. That said, he has shown he can be effective as a bullpen option against lineups sitting fastball, and his potential as a long reliever or swingman make him a useful asset to stash.
