YearComment
2014 In the five years since LOOGY Dan Runzler debuted, he has a league-average ERA in the majors but just 72 innings of work, as he quietly implodes in the far-flung outposts of the Pacific Coast League.
2013 A strained left latissimus dorsi muscle caused Runzler to miss a large chunk of 2012. The injury didn't require surgery, and rest seemed to do the trick as his stuff returned to pre-injury form when he got back to game action in June. Though the Giants experimented with Runzler starting in 2011, he's best suited for the bullpen because of his fastball-slider repertoire and his shaky control. Runzler's heater is a big-velocity pitch, sitting in the mid-90s, and earns swinging strikes commensurate with that speed. He's much better against left-handed hitters, but he's not helpless against right-handers. If he limits his walks, he's a big-league reliever.
2012 Super-small-sample-size caveats, but Runzler was again excellent against lefties, which is all he would be asked to do in a perfectly efficient system. The Giants have an excellent LOOGY in Javier Lopez, though, so they had to go looking for ways to use Runzler. He started 10 games for Fresno and got one start in the majors, against a lefty-free Astros lineup. Though he maintained his 95 mph velocity, he was otherwise terrible in that start, got sent back to the bullpen, and allowed no runz in September. Between those platoon splits and his limited fastball/slider repertoire, there's no reason to think he'll be a good starter.
2011 As a hard-throwing lefty with control problems, Runzler is comparable to Hinshaw, the differences being that Runzler’s wildness hasn’t yet reached the tipping point and he’s not particularly well-suited to situational work, having posted a fairly even platoon split last year before a dislocated knee cap cost him nearly all of the season’s second half. That split has reportedly tempted the Giants to convert Runzler to starting, something he last did in his final collegiate season with UC Riverside, with poor results. Not that there’s any room for Runzler in the Giants’ five-deep rotation—more likely, the goal is to stretch him out for long-relief duty.
2010 It's sort of a foolish exercise to talk about situational relief prospects, and Runzler's a good example of why. A ninth-round pick from UC Riverside in '07, control issues on mid-90s heat didn't seem like they were just going to go away... until they did, at which point he was on a rapid tour of the system, shooting up from the lowest full-season affiliate through every stop before arriving in the majors in September. Along the way, he held minor-league lefties to .114/.205/.127 while striking them out 41 percent of the time, and he was no less effective against big-leaguers. The one extra-base hit he allowed to lefties at any level was in his first game of the year (Sean Ratliff of Savannah); nobody scored. So just like that, the Giants have an excellent second lefty to back Affeldt, and effectively out of the uttermost depths of a farm system.
