2013 For those pitchers who do not profile in the top half of a major-league rotation or the back end of a bullpen, an annual goal is to simply secure a big-league paycheck for as much of the season as possible. In that regard, Demel's career is going backwards, with a three-year decline in innings pitched in the bigs that culminated in the single frame that he tossed in Arizona last season. Demel pitched admirably in Reno, with the best strikeout-to-walk ratio of his career, although a case of gopheritis sabotaged his ERA. Signed by the Astros, Demel has a chance to crack the Opening Day roster in Houston, though a poor spring would further extend his tour of the Pacific Coast League.
2012 Demel’s 2011 season was a step back from his 2010 in more ways than one. Since his 2010 wasn’t impressive to begin with, that step took him back to Triple-A. In 25 2/3 innings interspersed with a stint on the DL for shoulder tendinitis, a rehab assignment in Reno, and a subsequent demotion, Demel’s K:BB ratio was less than half of what it had been the season before, lefties tattooed him to the tune of a .379/.500/.552 line, and his fastball was 3 mph slower. Another step in the same direction might take him off the 40-man roster.
2011 Acquired from the Athletics in the deal that sent Conor Jackson to Oakland, Demel has a rocket for an arm, but lacks an effective guidance system. Newly-appointed GM Kevin Towers has a knack for building bullpens, so although Demel is not guaranteed a spot on the major-league roster to start the season, his proven ability to dial the heater up to 97 mph and miss bats with it in the bigs should help him stick out from the other candidates.
2010 Short, stocky fireballer Sam Demel got to Triple-A, but he needs to find some way to balance his arm strength with better control.
2009 One of the stronger arms in the arms in the system, Sam Demel gets it up to 97 and has a plus slider, but he's still a few refinements away from being guaranteed a big-league career.
