2011-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Do you care to expand on your worries over the Tigers' future....weak farm? Iffy everyday lineup? The rotation is locked up for a long while. Thank you. (lemppi from Iowa) | Weak farm; Kevin had them 27th in the organizational rankings this spring. They'll have some financial flexibility after this season, and while Mike Ilich isn't afraid to spend, they absolutely have to avoid the entanglements that produced so much dead salary over the past few years. Carlos Guillen, Magglio Ordonez, Dontrelle Willis, Nate Robertson, Jeremy Bonderman - I can't think of a team that had so many contracts of $10 million per year blow up on them all at once. (Jay Jaffe) |
2010-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Thanks for the answer. Bad contracts for Dombrowski? Dontrelle Willis 3-yr/$29M. Nate Robertson 3-yr/$21M. Jeremy Bonderman 4-yr/$38M (I did favor that deal though at the time). Pudge R a $13M option picked up for no apparent reason. Guillen as you noted. He had some real clunkers. I like the guy on the whole...but he created some of the problems they face currently...it wasn't all bad luck. (lemppi from Ankeny, IA) | Yes, those were questionable, except for Bonderman. I would still argue that overall he deserves a solid grade. I'll say something else in his favor: he hasn't blown any money on Chan-Ho Park, or players like Chan Ho. He signed Brandon Lyon for one year, then let Ed Wade sign him for three. Now, the bullpen has been a weakness for the Tigers at times, so you can argue about this, but I would say it's better to stay cheap than to take blind shots in the dark. (Steven Goldman) |
2010-03-30 13:00:00 (link to chat) | So it appears DET will be paying Dontrell and Nate Robinson about $20m to fill the #5 spots in two rotations. Which one will perform better? (Cris E from St Paul, MN) | You kinda have to pick Robertson, don't you? (I'm assuming you did mean Nate Robertson, and not former Knickerbocker Nate Robinson.) If we're thinking purely in terms of probability, there's very little shot of Robertson putting up a 0.6 K/BB rate. With Dontrelle, that would be an improvement over the last two years. (Shawn Hoffman) |
2009-08-28 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Should the Tigers sign Brad Penny, or can they put some faith in Nate Robertson/Armando Galaraga not sucking down the stretch? (David from Winston Salem) | I'd just as soon stick with Robertston/Galarraga. (John Perrotto) |
2008-01-17 14:00:00 (link to chat) | any thoughts on Nate Robertson's deal? Any idea what it's gonna take to lock up Cabrera? (DetroitDale from Florida) | I touched on this a bit in today's TA, but basically, that was a solid investment. Cabrera should be gunning for nine figures. (Christina Kahrl) |
