2018 It's not a misprint: Orlando logged significant playing time in 2016 while collecting 105 strikeouts alongside just 13 walks. The question marks finally caught up to him in 2017, derailing whatever good vibes came from those two partial seasons of mostly palatable play. They punctuated fairly pressing inquiries such as: "How was there a corner outfielder in the majors who hasn’t hit more than 10 homers in a season since 2010 (at Double-A)?" And: "No, seriously, how?" The speed and defense mostly still play, though, so he may not be done yet.
2017 As the right-handed half of an outfield platoon to open the season, Orlando slowly gained the trust of the Royals' staff and a subsequent increase in playing time. The Brazilian rode the BABIP train to success, but actually made a lower rate of hard contact than in his rookie season, which is probably why you see a decline in his slugging. Defensively, he's a mixed bag, looking much more comfortable in center field than in right. The combination of bat and glove make him a low-cost fourth-outfield option. His plate appearance totals can perform a barometer of the Royals' fortunes going forward. If he's around 250, as he was in 2015, that means the Royals have better options in place and the team is probably doing well. If above 400, that means the Royals failed to solve their right field riddle and the team is failing to meet expectations for the second consecutive season.
2016 Perhaps the first sign that the Royals had a magical season in store was Orlando's April arrival, when the veteran minor leaguer completed his 29-year, 5,000-mile trek from Sao Paolo to Kansas City by tripling in his first official at-bat. There were cheers and smiles and fist pumps and joy and the spectacle of yet another Royals outfielder morphing into a blur rounding second. There was Salvy Perez laughing as he capriciously pretended to throw Orlando's precious souvenir into the stands. There was Orlando himself channeling Kansas City's poet laureate, proclaiming, “That what speed do,” before enduring his first big-league Gatorade shower. And, not coincidentally, there was a win over a division rival.

Orlando is a perfectly serviceable fourth outfielder with great wheels, a plus glove, some thump in his bat and a penchant for making too many outs. He's like Jordan Danks, which is to say he's essentially fungible and easily forgettable. But he isn't really like Jordan Danks, because he had That Moment during That Season, and because baseball is tribal and Orlando is now forever a member of that tribe.

2015 Brazilian outfielder Paulo Orlando parlayed a solid season in the Omaha outfield into his third Lineout in these pages since 2009 and, less importantly, a spot on the 40-man roster; with blazing speed and a plus glove, he's so Royals, which no longer sounds like a pejorative.
2012 Dayton Moore likes his outfielders fast and former track star Orlando certainly fits that bill. He developed a little power in Double-A, but struggled when promoted to Omaha. With his plus glove, he projects as a fourth outfielder.
2009 Acquired from the White Sox for Horacio Ramirez, Paulo Orlando is an excellent center fielder with plenty of speed who fanned in 20 percent of his plate appearances last year. He's vying to become the first player from Brazil to make the majors.
