BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 Triple-digit heat is a kind of social privilege: Guys who have it tend to get a lot of chances. Case in point Cordier, whose debut in 2014 came a full decade and three team-switches after he was drafted. He returned to The Show last year, now playing for his fifth organization, and logged the third-hottest average heater when he did. And... well, thus concludes the highlight reel. He struggled to miss bats in his dozen prime-time innings, controlled his pitches poorly and got knocked about rather rudely by big-league hitters. He'll get another chance. Check your privilege, kid.
2015 Cordier can throw a baseball 100 mph (which makes confusing him for Brett Bochy even funnier). Most humans who can do that find their way to the major leagues, but the majority do not take the road less traveled, a road that takes them through four organizations over nine professional seasons before one finally offers a September audition. Cordier was once a polished cold-weather prep-schooler with merely decent velocity and advanced secondary stuff. But while he regained and even bolstered his gas after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2007, his slider and changeup regressed. Despite the caliber of bullets in his right arm, Cordier is a long shot to secure a stable bullpen role unless his command or breaking ball takes a step forward. He'll only turn 29 in February, though, and with a brief taste of The Show to motivate him, there is no reason to give up yet.
2014 Erik Cordier doesn't command his straight fastball, but he lights up radar guns so he gets a comment.
2013 At one point a highly touted prospect, Erik Cordier continues to see his stock slide due to injuries.
2012 Erik Cordier is a big and blocky right-hander with a zipper and control issues. His future is in the bullpen, since his stuff is no longer good enough to overcome those issues.
2011 Big righty Erik Cordier isn't the same power arm he was prior to Tommy John surgery, but he could still end up a nice middle reliever.
2010 Acquired from the Royals three years ago for Tony Pena, Jr., Erik Cordier was once a highly-touted arm, but his stuff is far from what it used to be after a series of arm injuries.

2015-06-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)When looking at pitchers how do you grade the FB? I was always told that you go by command, movement, then velocity. For example, a pitcher such as Erik Cordier might have a true 80 FB but plays down so much because of lack of movement and command, would you downgrade the pitch to a 70?
(Peter from Pittsburgh)
The ceiling has a lot to do with velocity. A guy who tops out at 89 mph will never have an 80 fastball no matter how good the command is. But in terms of effectiveness, I've always said that the order of importance is location, movement and then speed in that order. (Jeff Moore)

PITCHf/x Pitcher Profile

A Collaboration between BrooksBaseball.net and Baseball Prospectus - Pitch classifications provided by Pitch Info LLC

Although he has not thrown an MLB pitch in 2024, Erik Cordier threw 359 pitches that were tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2014 and 2015, all of them occuring in Spring Training. In 2015, he relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (99mph) and Slider (86mph).
