YearComment
2011 While Clevelan Santeliz has dialed his heat into the mid-90s, his bulk, lack of durability, command issues, and time lost to shoulder woes got him taken off the 40-man.
2010 One of those little guys with a big arm, Santeliz turned into a very real prospect in 2009 by finishing the year with a sub-1.00 ERA, having allowed earned runs in just two of his last 26 appearances. His mid-90s fastball can get up to the 97-98 range at times, his slider is effective enough considering his velocity, and he added a splitter to the mix last year that provides some movement. After an equally impressive showing over the winter in his native Venezuela, Santeliz is a longshot to make the big-league club this spring, but it might not take much longer after that.
2009 The Sox’s decision to add hard-throwing Venezuelan Clevelan Santeliz—of whom scouts have observed a disturbing cockiness-to-talent ratio—to the 40-man roster in November cost them Derek Rodriguez, a more advanced pitcher, when the latter was spirited away in the Rule 5 draft.
