BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2015 For the second straight season, “Lucho” had his opportunity to show what he could do in the bigs, and for the second time he stumbled. The glove continued to play above average at the hot corner, but his bat deteriorated further in the face of major-league pitching. His two primary strengths in the minors—a better-than-average contact rate and a penchant for pulling fly balls for doubles—fell victim to big-league breaking balls just beyond the outer half, ballooning his K-rate to double his minor-league mark and swelling his pop-up rate north of 22 percent. Upon returning to Salt Lake, he did his usual yeoman's work, but it was clear that his future wasn't in Anaheim. The Brewers claimed him.
2014 Jimenez received his first cup of coffee last season and spat it out. Forever known as a bat-only prospect, his affinity for singles and doubles didn't translate to the majors. His undisciplined approach, meanwhile, is more of a universally understood frown. Not only did he strike out 14 times as often as he walked, but he also looked helpless against soft or spinning. Though the Angels left him at third base for most of his minor-league career, they finally experimented with him at other positions in Salt Lake. Indications have always been that his defense is just average, but the Angels even tried him at shortstopdelusional, perhaps; desperate, maybe; but a telling indication of what they see in him.
2013 Neither snow nor rain nor level nor ballpark can disrupt Jimenezs batting statistics. In four levels over the past three seasons, his OPS has reliably landed between .800 and .850. He doesnt strike out, he leads every team hes on in doubles, hes not particularly flashy nor reliable as a defender, and hed rather not walk if thats okay with you. Without a spectacular offensive season, he won't have a full-time job handed to him, and he has never played a game in the United States anywhere but third base, so he doesnt bring much utility. Hell be lucky to get a pinch-hitting appearance or two before Cowart passes him on the organizational depth chart.
2012 The Texas League was the big test for power-hitting Luis Jimenez, who had spent most of his career in supercharged offensive environments. The third baseman passed, leading the league in doubles and finishing in the top 10 in OPS.
2011 Luis Jimenez has little but a bat to recommend him; fortunately, his lumber appeared to have survived a 2009 lost to a torn labrum. His quick but wild swing produced doubles in droves, but like Detective John Kimbles group of unruly kindergartners, he lacks discipline.
2010 Dominican third baseman Luis Jimenez didn't get a chance to build on 2008's .331/.361/.630 and Pioneer League-leading 15 homers because he missed 2009 due to a torn labrum which required surgery.
2009 Luis Jimenez is a bat-only prospect at the hot corner, but he's hit .322/.354/.583 in his first 133 pro games and the Angels are looking forward to seeing what he'll do in a full-season league as a 21-year-old.
