2018 Kris Negron is good enough to thump Triple-A pitching, but hasn't shown an ability to do the same in the bigs. There will be lots of headlines with the phrase "non-roster invitee" and his name in them.
2016 We were right, of course, but that doesn't mean we're happy about it. When Negron managed to randomly display some fleeting ability with the bat during a two-month stint with the Reds back in 2014, we called it exactly that: random and fleeting. Sometimes players like Negron with long and sordid minor-league track records turn into solid major leaguers. Sometimes storm clouds deliver frogs instead of rain. Sometimes the conspiracy theory turns out to be true. Sometimes we let our affinity for effort and attitude and a redemptive narrative cloud our judgment, and we hope someone like Negron will carve out a big-league career, because he'll appreciate it, and so will we. Almost always, we're disappointed.
2015 Negron reached the majors in mid-July and, from August 1st on, started 32 games at second and third base while also making brief appearances in left field and at shortstop. The very best thing a fringe utility player can do for his career is catch lightning in a bottle when he gets his first shot at playing time; Negron's best seasonal OPS in the minors was the .765 mark he posted between Rookie and short-season ball as a 20-year-old in 2006. Which is to say that the .810 figure he put up in Cincinnati is, how do you say, a fluke. The man can steal a base and his versatility is useful on a bench, but don't think Negron's outburst makes Brandon Phillips expendable. Not that you were thinking that. We're just saying.
2013 Negron can play anywhere on the infield or outfield but doesn't hit. He has no power and less plate discipline. He's an excellent basestealer, succeeding on 84 percent of his attempts in seven minor-league seasons. A right ACL injury ended Negron's season in July and eventually required surgery. Assuming he's healthy, he can resume his quest to become the new Wilson Valdez.
2012 After a terrible 2011, Kris Negron might best serve as a warning to the Reds' horde of shortstops who don't play short that well and don't hit enough to get looks anywhere else.
2011 Negron was known for his glove before coming to the Reds organization in the Alex Gonzalez trade, but his bat has perked up after the swap. The natural shortstop has spent time at every position but first, catcher, and pitcher, and his speed has served him well on the basepaths, where he boasts a career 83.2 percent stolen-base success rate. After posting a 952 OPS in the Arizona Fall League, he's on the verge of major-league utilitymanhood.
