2017-04-28 13:30:00 (link to chat) | How sad of a dynasty league team do you have if you've agreed to trade Brian Dozier and Dellin Betances for Mickey Moniak and Robert Gsellman? (Zach G from OFFICIA) | You know those montages in sitcoms or dramedies where people walk around a park or a pier or sit on a bench and just like, contemplate life and how they've been led to this point? Maybe stare out a bay window as it rains and their coffee gets cold? Yeah. (Craig Goldstein) |
2015-04-16 17:00:00 (link to chat) | Am I right to be resigning myself to zero return on Mat Latos in a dynasty league? Ditto Betances? (Len from Jacksonville) | Maybe not zero, but pretty low in Latos' case. No one is going to touch him until he puts at least 3-4 good starts together. Dellin Betances is different because he was so good so recently, and it seems like he could be "fixed" at some point. However, yes, he is not going to get you a lot back at the moment. (Mike Gianella) |
2015-04-16 17:00:00 (link to chat) | Mike,
Thanks for the chat!! You guys are the best!! What are your thoughts about Dellin Betances? Is his reduced velocity/control issue simply a mechanics thing or is it likely that there's some underlying injury issue?? Thanks for sharing your thoughts! (Horace from NYC) | I suspect it's mechanical, though if he's hiding an injury I'd have no way of knowing. He has shown some signs of throwing faster, so maybe it is mechanical and he's about to turn a corner. Then again, I remember telling myself that years ago with Ubaldo Jimenez and it didn't happen. (Mike Gianella) |
2015-02-25 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Aaron Sanchez or Dellin Betances as a closer? Who has more dominating stuff in that role? (Drew from Topeke) | Betances. I whiffed on him, too. Never bought him as a starting pitcher, but thought late inning reliever with stuff over command profile. He was still a mess mechanically like... a year and a half ago! Big pitchers are the weirdest like that. Sometimes it's like a light switch with those guys. They figure something out or a coach says something and all of a sudden it clicks and their big, awkward delivery all of a sudden works. Give up on those types at your peril. These two have some of the better raw stuff in the game. (Al Skorupa) |
2015-02-13 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Which of these three should I call up to begin the season? Need to open a prospect spot for my next draft pick. In other words, which of these three is the safest bet to give me good production from the very beginning of the season?
Kris Bryant
Aaron Sanchez
Kevin Gausman (Chris from California) | Bryant is the safest bet by default because he's a hitter, although he could start in the minors because of service time. I love Sanchez and maybe he'll close but maybe he'll be in middle relief. He could be Dellin Betances or Carlos Martinez. Gausman could have the greatest real life potential of the three but starting pitchers have so many outcomes. (Mike Gianella) |
2015-02-13 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Which side- my Dellin Betances for Hector Rondon and Zach Britton. It's a H2H league, and while Betances could be great, I should be picking up more saves, which I need more than the few extra K's/week Betances might get me. I also expect Betances to get less IP this year assuming he closes, and if he struggles at all I don't think the Yanks hesitate to go with Andrew Miller. (Shawn from Cubicle) | I love Betances, but I think you have to take the two closers in that format, particularly if closers are going to be taken/frozen in your draft/auction. I do think Betances is the man and he'll be fine, though, and every closer has risk of losing his job if he struggles. (Mike Gianella) |
2014-12-11 18:00:00 (link to chat) | Who are your best bets to attain the title closer? I currently own shares of Dellin Betances, Neil Ramirez, and Bobby Parnell. Any probables in that group? Also, Any news on who offered Robertson? (Closer to Closing from In the Bullpen) | I think you'll see Betances take the reigns at the back end of Yankees games for much of the 2015 season, and that should be a ton of fun to watch. Both Ramirez and Parnell are going to get opportunities, but I'm buying Betances more than those two. (Mark Anderson) |
2014-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Are there any non-closing RPs that you think could begin 2015 as the closer, that we can stash now (other than Dellin Betances)? (Shawnykid23 from CT) | This is always pure guesswork. I love Ken Giles if the Phillies can move that Papelbon contract, but who the heck knows how that will play out? (Mike Gianella) |
2014-09-08 13:00:00 (link to chat) | So which active player makes you most happy? (Pharrell from Virginia ) | Ben Paulsen. Among star-types: Sal Perez, Sean Doolittle, Dellin Betances. (Sam Miller) |
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat) | David Wright, Mike Minor, James Shields, Gregory Polanco for Paul Goldschmidt, George Springer and Dellin Betances. Would you make this move or is it not enough for Goldy? (Jimbo from LA) | This is bordering on too many moving parts but I think this is fair, unless you suddenly find yourself in need of starting pitchers. (Mauricio Rubio) |
2014-04-09 19:00:00 (link to chat) | I've been getting crushed by injuries early. I'm in a 15 team mixed where my only healthy closer left is Latroy Hawkins, yeah I know. There are no closers on waivers and most of the really good closers in waiting are taken. I'm looking at names like A.J Ramos, Jake McGee and Edward Mujica. If you're speculating on future saves are there any under the radar options that people might not be that familiar with? Thanks. (KcDozer from Florida) | Starting to think there are no healthy relievers left. I would say Cody Allen but Bret Sayre has blown him up already. Daniel Webb on the White Sox should get a look if Matt Lindstrom fails in Nate Jones' absence. Jeurys Familia has his issues and isn't exactly holding it down this year but he still throws hard and has a slider which is the requisite closer starting kit. Dellin Betances can get a look, there are a few names out there. (Mauricio Rubio) |
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat) | What separates Tyler Matzek from someone like Dellin Betances or any number of pitchers that never could really find the strike zone? Stuff? Age? Experience? I realize Betances is much older, which hurts the comparison a bit, but I have never understood why some prospects are afforded a much longer rope when they struggle. Is it simply a case by case scouting thing? (Anthony from Long Island) | Athleticism. Betances is a well below-average athlete and struggles with adjustments. Matzek has a much better chance of smoothing it out. (Jason Parks) |
2012-12-13 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Back in August you wrote about the top 10 prospects in the minors (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=17780). You ranked Taijuan Walker 7th. 2012 was by no means a breeze for Walker, but with his athleticism, there is less to worry about than say someone with Dellin Betances' athleticism. What adjustments does Walker need to make this season and how soon before we see him in Seattle? (Jackson from Charming, CA) | He needs to continue to refine his FB command and the utility of his secondary arsenal, especially his change-up. He's a top ten prospect in the game, and I think he gets a cup in 2013; could be in the rotation in '14. (Jason Parks) |
2012-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Dellin Betances got ranked #63 prospect before this year by BOTH BP and BA. 1) What are the odds? 2) WHY??? I mean, Yankees prospects come in two tastes: either Catcher prospects that won't stick behind the plate or Fireballers without control. Wouldn't it be wiser to steer clear of them? (Guillermo from Montevideo, Uruguay) | No. But it would be wiser to focus on the individual players/prospect, removing the hype associated with the team or the stigma associated with the distinctions. Every prospect is unique. (Jason Parks) |
2012-01-24 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Hope you can help me! In an AL-only dynasty league, which of these prospects would you NOT trade for JJ Hardy to fill a dire need at SS - Leonys Martin, Travis D'Arnaud, Dellin Betances, Matt Moore, Neil Ramirez, Anthony Gose (jtanker33 from Dayton) | If you're all in for this season, then Moore is the only one I'd say is untouchable. That said, you shouldn't need to deal some of these other guys for Hardy either. D'Arnaud and Betances should be taken off the table if at all possible. I'd try to deal Ramirez first. (Derek Carty) |
2011-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | In five years Dellin Betances will be: a)mid-rotation starter with frontline stuff?
OR: b)Daniel Cabrera redux. (T from NYC) | C. Late-inning reliever. (Kevin Goldstein) |
2011-03-08 14:00:00 (link to chat) | From what I have seen of Dellin Betances (Pitcher-Yankees)I think he is destined to be Mariano's replacement. What do you think? (bfitzge3 from Upstate NY) | Is he getting paid $35 million? Betances is ticketed for the rotation, and the better he pitches in the minors, the less likely he'll be to get any saves. (Cory Schwartz) |
2008-09-03 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Care to explain the "Dellin Betances has some serious issues" part? (david from chi, ill) | He's had some kind of injury issues every year as a pro, and he's walked pretty much one guy for every two innings pitched. Those are issues. (Kevin Goldstein) |
2008-05-21 13:00:00 (link to chat) | How serious are Dellin Betances's control issues? Has Zach McAllister passed him as a prospect? (Jon from NJ) | He's walked 32 in 47 innings, so pretty serious. At the same time, he's allowed just 27 hits and struck out 57, so that's serious stuff. Again, bet on the stuff, and Betances is the better prospect. (Kevin Goldstein) |
