(laxtonto from trapped in my office) | One other thing on Buckel: I don't think a turnaround is going to happen overnight. It often doesn't with these guys. But I also think you give him up to a couple years to get it turned around. The Rangers have some experience with this â€" two going the negative direction, and one going positive. Matt Thompson and Kasey Kiker, two former top prospects, both lost their careers to the "yips." Michael Kirkman overcame it. The good thing about Buckel, for now, is that he still has the stuff. (Rob from Brighton, MA) | I'll tell you the story, but don't repeat it. When Blake Beavan was coming up in the Rangers minor league system, he had to deal with the reality that the mid-90s gas he had in high school wasn't a part of his professional repertoire. He obviously wanted it to re-merge, but he became a better pitcher for it and now he's a major league arm.
This is a secondhand story, but it comes from a vey reliable source and I've confirmed it with other eye witnesses to the event. One night, former number one pick Kasey Kiker was charting Beavan's start, and he kept a second chart in order to pull off this prank. He filled the extra chart with fastballs in the mid-90s, and when Beavan showed up after the start to see how he threw, Kiker informed him that he was dealing with the fastball, working it back into his high school mid-90s level. Beavan, always the cocky pitcher, had a bounce in his step with the affirmation that his once dead velo had risen from the grave, just as he had predicted.
Beavan is feeling good, and goes to take a shower. When he returns, Kiker puts the real chart on his locker and makes a point to tell him that the chart he originally showed him was bogus and that he was still the same 90-91 pitcher he had been as a pro. Beavan's mood was crushed. Kiker was rolling. Cruel joke. Its one of my favorite Kiker stories, and I have a ton of them, What a character. (Jason Parks) |

Although he has not thrown an MLB pitch in 2024, Kasey Kiker threw 38 pitches that were tracked by the PITCHf/x system in 2010, all of them occuring in Spring Training. In 2010, he relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (90mph) and Curve (79mph), also mixing in a Change (81mph).
