2017 He’s not the best backup catcher in baseball, but Wilson might be the most backup catcher in the game. To wit: he was drafted in the 48th round of the 2002 amateur draft, just two spots ahead of fellow second-string backstop Drew Butera. (That’s backup catcher territory.) He’s fluttered between orgs like a brick-shaped butterfly; during the 2016 season he went from the Rangers to the Tigers, then back to the Rangers before finally landing with his hometown Rays. And of course he hits poorly—even for a catcher—but gets raves for his game-calling and has posted good minor-league framing numbers. Best of all this is the first time he’s appeared in this Annual in four years, ostensibly because third-string catchers fail to put the “fun” in fungible.
2013 Im done with Twitter, Wilson tweeted in July. Try to be fan friendly and all I get is criticism. I wasnt blessed with 5 tools. I worked hard to get here. Its true: Wilson is a 48th-round pick who racked up more than 100 days of service time in the majors before he ever got to start a game. He carved out a comfortable living as the glove Mike Scioscia could love, and if his batting isnt enough for fans, its enough to keep a career going for five or 10 years as a backup. His OPS+ in 2012 was 67; 13 teams gave at least 20 games to a backup catcher who was worse, while the Mets, Royals and Orioles gave at least 20 games to two backup catchers who were worse. In the end, the Angels waived Wilson and the Jays snagged him. Wilsons Twitter handle, meanwhile, was snatched up by Ms. Betsy Webb, who is loving life and all it has to offer.
2012 Call a no-hitter and some catchers are rewarded with a steak dinner; Bobby Wilson's prize was a whole lot of playing time. After starting 10 games all season, Wilson was behind the plate for Ervin Santana's no-hitter on July 27. Mike Scioscia was so impressed that he started Wilson 14 times in August and 10 in September, even as the former 48th-round draft pick hit .183/.224/.296 from the no-hitter on. He was the alternative to Mathis, so Angels fans briefly loved him, but he's in danger of becoming Mathis 2.0. He's got a massive platoon split in his career, and Conger has a sizable gap in the other direction, but the Angels opted not to gamble on a two-lousy-player platoon, adding Iannetta instead.
2011 In a season that saw serious injuries to Kendry Morales and Jeff Mathis, Wilson escaped the itinerant benchwarmer role that hed played in 2009, graduating to the more lucrative gig of backup catcher, which allowed him to ride the pine while regularly drawing major-league paychecks. Wilson could outhit Mathis while playing capable defense, but he doesnt possess any skills spectacular enough to unseat the incumbent; in his first career start, Mark Teixeira sent him to the DL with a bad case of home-plate collision, as if to remind him of his lot in life. Consistent with reports of questionable bat speed, Wilson struggled to hit the hard stuff, but punished pitchers for attempting to sneak anything with a bend in it by him. Only 27, hell likely spend the next decade paying dues to the International Brotherhood of Backup Catchers.
2010 The limitations of the Mathis/Napoli tandemn prompted the Angels to carry Wilson as a third catcher intermittently, basically wasting a bench spot and a few roundtrip plane fares. Prior to September, he was recalled from Triple-A three times, playing all of three innings in three weeks; hell, Scioscia could have done that himself. In any event, this high school teammate of Casey Kotchman has methodically climbed the organizational ladder because he's sound on both sides of the ball. One shouldn't ding his 2009 Triple-A showing too badly in light of the impact of repeated cases of forced idleness. He did throw out 38 percent of base thieves, and he really couldn't be a worse hitter than Mathis, though he's no major improvement, either.
2009 A catcher with a solid offensive resum, Wilson got a brief call-up in 2008, but he's in the wrong organization as a young catcher without obvious starting potential. It's not that he's bad, he's just merely average. He has some hitting skills, but not much power, and he's a good receiver with a decent arm, but there's no wow factor to his game, and he's in danger of being an up-and-down Quad-A lifer.
2008 Bobby Wilson keeps hitting for average, making him a good bet to be the backup catcher in place of Mathis by the end of the year.
2007 A high school teammate of Casey Kotchman`s, Wilson`s a decent enough catching prospect, and he swings a quick bat that generates a lot of liners. He`s that odd rarity, a catcher who can throw well, but is sort of rough behind the plate; anybody remember Mike Heath? He won`t be a major improvement on Napoli or anyone else, just something different, and a plausible half of a job-sharing arrangement.

2012-05-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any updates on how soon Hank Conger will be back? If soon, do you see him coming up quickly while Iannetta is on the DL?
(LoyalRoyal from Kansas)
Word is he should be back playing in a week and a half or so. As long as the Halos like what they see, I think he'll be in LA shortly after that. With the team needing to make waves, they can't be happy with Bobby Wilson as their catcher. (Derek Carty)
2009-07-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)The Angels just called up Sean Rodriguez and Bobby Wilson...no corresponding moves otherwise..mean anything?
(Hal from LA)
Don't they do something with Sean Rodriguez every fourth day? I wouldn't read into it. (Joe Sheehan)
