2011 Claimed off waivers from the Florida Marlins, former supplemental first-round pick Ryan Tucker will look to join the list of successful reclamation projects to emerge from the Rangers organization in recent years.
2010 It was a lost year for Tucker, a 2005 supplemental first-rounder, who missed most of the season after knee surgery. The great insight of Ray Kroc at the founding of the McDonald's chain was that variety equals inefficiency. Alas, the opposite is true in baseball, and Tucker's mid-90s fastball remains his only plus pitch. As such, though he's been a starter thus far, a date with the bullpen seems an inevitability. Even then, he's going to have to find a consistent off-speed pitch if he's going to be a dependable asset.
2009 Tucker's value was boosted by improved command in 2007, but his 2008 did not go nearly as well after leaving the minors. The control problems resurfaced, and as he lacks a consistent second pitch—his changeup is either a plus or fails to do what it's meant to—continuing as a starter was a problem. If his changeup becomes a consistent offering, he's capable of starting, even more so if his slider stops being flat. Otherwise, he's on track to be a dominating, fireballing reliever—not a bad downside for the Marlins.
2008 Right-hander Ryan Tucker has the best arm strength in the system, with a fastball that sits in the mid-90s and touches 97 mph, but scouts project him as a reliever in the end due to his lack of command or any usable secondary offering.
2007 Ryan Tucker has a live arm and a hard fastball, but struggles with his command and lacks a reliable second pitch. He`s just 19, so we can cut him some slack for a year or three.

2008-05-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Ryan Tucker. Any insight on his blowout start in terms of pitch development progress? Any other general thoughts on him would be appreciated.
(Freddie Blassie from Helena, MT)
What you are looking at is much improved command and some improvements on the breaking ball. He always had the best arm strength amongst that group of young arms in the system and I think what you are seeing is very real. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-05-05 12:30:00 (link to chat)Ryan Tucker has been nearly unhittable this year with his mid-high 90s heater. Most scouts project him as a closer for the Marlins due to a lack of secondary offerings, but do you think he can succeed in the rotation?
(Jonathan from FLA)
I'm a long-term believer in Tucker -- I can't remember when he was a breakout prospect of mine, but he absolutely once was. The fastball has been fantastic this year, and I've actually heard about consistency in the breaking ball category. I know he uses a splitter and a slider, so if he can make both of those a plus, there's no reason to relegate him to the bullpen yet. (Bryan Smith)

2010-10-06 10:00:002010 Playoffs Day OneThis makes the Rangers claiming Ryan Tucker off waivers rather trivial now, huh?
