2014 Sinker-slider specialist Ramon Troncoso spent a few ineffective months in the White Sox' bullpen and survived a frightening bout of pericarditis, but with his walk and strikeout rates in danger of crossing paths he’s barely suited for mop-up duty.
2012 Though Troncoso can still generate groundballs with some frequency, he's become all too homer-prone, and while one can read that as bad luck on a HR/FB rate that's bound to regress, it's just as apparent that he's serving up more cookies than Mrs. Fields. He's just another fringe reliever at this point.
2011 Even in emerging as a key bullpen cog in 2009, Troncoso was set up for an overwork-related fall, given that he ranked second in the league in relief innings and tailed off late in the year. Sure enough, Joe Torre went to the whip right out of the gate in 2010, using Troncoso 15 times in the season's first 22 games, and just as surely, the pitcher's performance suffered thereafter—five homers and a 6.64 ERA in 21 2/3 innings over the next two months, followed by the better part of July and August spent at Triple-A before a somewhat improved September return. Even with the time away, Troncoso ranked second in the league behind only George Sherrill in allowing 22 inherited runners to score, and that was with the benefit of substantial BABIP and walk-rate improvements. Meanwhile, his velocity dipped relative to 2009, and his home run/fly ball rate went over the wall. Now he's just another question mark in a bullpen full of them.
2010 After wetting his feet in low-leverage bullpen duty in 2008, Troncoso emerged as a vital cog in '09, working his way into the team's top righty setup role by Memorial Day, winding up second in the league in relief innings and eighth in WXRL. Thanks to his 93 mph fastball and a heavy sinker, Troncoso generated ground balls galore, and while his strikeout rate receded to a level in line with his track record, he still missed a reasonable number of bats. Note that his untranslated walk rate was inflated by nine intentional passes. A 4.87 ERA over the final two months should serve to remind that, as with many a Torre-driven reliever, Troncoso's workload bears watching, though at this writing the Dodgers are considering him to be a possible fifth starter.
2009 Troncoso is a late-blooming Dominican with a low-90s fastball with heavy sink, plus secondary offerings that have improved as he climbed the organizational ladder. He impressed the Dodger brass enough in spring training to break camp with the team, but was roughed up and sent down until late June, when he returned for good. He did a decent job in a low-leverage role, with plenty of ground balls and a strikeout rate that was off the charts relative to his track record. He did struggle with inherited runners (his Fair Run Average was 4.93), but if the K's are a true reflection of improved stuff, he’ll likely work his way up the bullpen hierarchy.
2008 A late bloomer who spent three years in the Dominican Summer League, Ramon Troncoso is a strike-throwing machine who can touch 96 mph with his fastball, and his secondary stuff continues to improve as he climbs the ladder.

2010-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think there's a chance Torre uses any other reliever than Broxton or Kuo the rest of the season?
(Dingers Blog from Los Angeles)
Man, watching the Dodger bullpen has become quite an ordeal lately, as Torre has burned through yet another set of high quality arms who were too successful for their own good - Ramon Troncoso, please join Corey Wade in the Scott Proctor Memorial Lounge, and if you see Ronald Belisario, tell him he's needed there too. Oh, and Mr. Kuo, your third Tommy John surgery is scheduled. Same side, correct? (Jay Jaffe)
