2011 In a previous life, Romulo Sanchez was a Mississippi River paddlewheel steamboat named the Belle of Maracay, and he happily ferried passengers up and down from Davenport to Natchez. Out of options, the fastballer will either make the team or sail on to another port.
2010 This massive steamer failed to make port with the Pirates, and was swapped to the Yankees for the DFA'd Eric Hacker. Sanchez had long ago been consigned to the bullpen by Pittsburgh, but the Yankees pressed him into the rotation at Scranton and he held his own, showing a vastly improved fastball. Sanchez is wild and that fastball is pretty much all he has that's worth writing about, but it was enough to get him protected on the 40-man roster this winter. The 9.2 strikeouts per nine Sanchez achieved last year was a career-high; if he holds onto his newfound velocity, he's a dark horse candidate for the bullpen.
2009 Discarded by the Dodgers after one season in the Venezuelan Summer League, Sanchez has spent parts of the past two seasons in the Pirates' bullpen. He is intriguing from the standpoint that he's very large and throws hard, but until he learns to throw strikes with something other than the fastball he will remain more intriguing than productive. Perhaps a cloaking device would help?
2008 Sanchez was released by the Dodgers in 2003 after two seasons in the Venezuelan Summer League. Picked off the scrap heap by the Pirates, he reached the major leagues last August. Sanchez throws extremely hard, though he isn't always sure where the ball is going. If he gains command of his heater and adds a reliable second pitch, something he will work on at Triple-A to begin this season, he could be a future closer. If not, it's back to the Beta Quadrant.
