BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Thirty-something shortstop Angel Sanchez can still pick it and boasts a career .282/.347/.372 Triple-A line, but has never made his mark in parts of four big-league seasons and was released by the White Sox.
2013 Angel Sanchez plays shortstop defense at a major-league level and bunts well, but his bat is light enough that he should only be a backup for a team blessed with middle infielders who are prone to stay healthy.
2012 Sanchez still hits like a backup shortstop, but at least the Astros received the benefit of the slick fielding he'd always shown prior to 2010. He didn't appear hurt in 2010, but wasn't getting to balls he was expected to get. In 2011, he showed many more of the athletic moves that got him to the majors in the first place. Nothing in his pedigree suggests he'll escape the “use only in case of emergency” label, but as long as he can keep his on-base percentage around .300 and bunt on demand, his glove should allow him to accrue service time for another couple of years.
2011 Sanchez hit .280 in 269 plate appearances for the Astros last season, which proves only one thing: sabermetricians are correct when they claim that batting average is one of the most meaningless statistics in baseball. You don't need to be of that religion or a devotee of advanced metrics to understand that in spite of his veneer of competency, Sanchez is merely a journeyman who barely kept his head above replacement level. Sanchez got a chance to start for two months when Tommy Manzella broke a finger, but he will likely find himself in a utility role or back at Triple-A this season, as Clint Barmes has the inside track on the shortstop job after being acquired from the Rockies in a November trade.
2008 Angel Sanchez has an outstanding glove, but a questionable bat. Missing all of 2007 due to shoulder surgery didn't help with the latter.
2007 By making his major league debut last September, Sanchez spared the Royals the humiliation of having their 2001 draft--the one made famous by drafting Colt Griffin and Roscoe Crosby in the first two rounds--fail to yield a single major league player, which has only happened four times in the draft`s history. Sanchez is Puerto Rican, but his skills come straight out of central casting for a Dominican shortstop: Good defense, good contact skills, little plate discipline, and not a trace of power. His best asset--and the best reason to give him playing time this year--is that he is not Angel Berroa. See also: Faint praise, damning with.
