2017 The very dumb, very human phenomenon of returning again and again to things that are bad for you is well-documented. A little less well-documented is the equally dumb and equally human phenomenon of returning again and again to things that aren’t quite bad for you, but certainly aren’t good for you; not out of desire or devotion but out of simple convenience and familiarity. This is the sandwich place you keep going to not because you like it but because it is cheap and you know what to order or the old acquaintance you keep getting drinks with not because you enjoy their company but because you know exactly what to expect and you do not have to try. Cleveland signed Gimenez for the third time in six years in May after he was designated for assignment by Texas.
2016 Small sample sizes can be fun. In 36 major-league games last year, Gimenez posted his best slugging percentage since 2008 and his best ISO since 2007 (min. 100 PA). This came after a minor-league performance that was serviceable but certainly didn't lead to any “Free Chris Gimenez” campaigns on the internet, not even among the most ardent Rangers diehards in Tarrant County. Buried behind Robinson Chirinos and Carlos Corporan to start the season, Gimenez benefited significantly from Chirinos' health woes down the stretch, starting in 35 of the Rangers' final 59 regular-season games and earning two playoff starts in the ALDS to boot. If statistics lie, then when it comes to part-time players and late-season call-ups, they are Pinocchio before he ultimately learns his lesson and turns into a real live boy.
2015 After his cross-country tour took him through Seattle, Tampa and Arlington, Chris Gimenez went back to where it all started (Cleveland) in hopes that his defensive versatility would be put to good use. He's in Texas again as of this writing, but don't be surprised if that's already outdated.
2014 An injured ligament sheath in his hand sent him to the disabled list for a month, weakened his swing when he returned and ruined his offensive production, but the affable, steady Gimenez handled the Rays' young Triple-A pitching prospects very well. His teammates in Durham called him "coach," hinting at his second career to come. Gimenez was healthy enough by September 1st to earn an expanded-roster call-up as Tampa Bay's third backstop. He's just what you want in a Triple-A catcher on the 40-man, and his plate discipline is decent enough to keep from embarrassing you if you have to give him more than a few big-league at-bats. You can also stick him at first base, third base and, in a pinch, corner outfield.
2013 In February 2012, the Rays, chronically beset by catcheritis, signed Gimenezwho also plays corner infield and outfieldto a minor-league deal. They needed him in the majors almost immediately when Jose Lobaton hit the DL just after Easter. Gimenez performed at just about replacement level until Lobaton returned in late May. Back in Triple-A, Gimenezs OPS flirted with 900 all summer while he waited for the fragile Lobaton to get hurt again, but Lobaton stayed healthy. In some other world, Gimenez forms a catcher-corner infielder/outfielder platoon with lefty-swinging Stephen Vogt, but unfortunately that world is the International League. Nonetheless, an affable, outgoing teammate with multiple skills is an essential 40-man commodity, and Gimenez is likely to log a few major-league at-bats again this year.
2012 Gimenez says he carries six different gloves in his equipment bag. Besides catcher, he can play first base, third base, and the outfield. That versatility got him called up to replace Adam Moore as the Mariners' backup in early April, but a variety of Gimenezes is more attractive in principle than in practice. His bat, after all, is flimsy even for a backup catcher. Besides his weekly start behind the plate, the Mariners let him play outfield just once and first base twice. Ultimately, he got loads of starts for Tacoma after a June demotion. His career .268/.376/.461 minor league line (generally in leagues for which he was a year too old) made him a better backup bet than the various Josh Bards available to teams like Seattle, but chances of a payout now that he's pushing 30 are extremely long.
2011 While he played 28 big-league games in 2010, Gimenez's opportunity was more an act of desperation than an endorsement of his abilities; once Carlos Santana's knee went kablooey, the club turned to anyone who knew how to wear a catcher's mask. While one envisions Gimenez as an Eli Marrero type, a player who could catch and play both the infield and outfield corners, he just isn't a good enough hitter to justify actually playing him at those positions. Removed from the 40-man after the season, he'll ply his trade elsewhere in 2011, since just as Ben Geisler in Barton Fink always needs Indians, baseball always needs catchers.
2010 If the Indians merit a designated Ringo Starr type, Gimenez might be that guy, the one who fell into a better gig than expected, and survived. A catcher who plays some first base and outfield because he's asked to, he hasn't mashed since being an older High-A player in 2007, but he's playable behind the plate. The acquisition of Marson and a year-ending 8-for-76 run after the All-Star break has muddled whatever limited future Gimenez had, but with the trade of Shoppach, he has a shot at a reserve job.
2009 Fasano's redundancy is partly due to the presence of Chris Gimenez, an Astros castoff who might make a useful bench bat.

2009-08-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Can you concoct an explanation of why it makes sense to use a combination of an injured Trevor Crowe, a talent-limited Chris Gimenez, and adorable-but-miniscule Jamey Carroll in corner outfield slots while Matt LaPorta (and others) wander around in the wilds of Columbus? My best shots involve YouTube threats and heavy metal ingestion.
(buffum from Austin TX)
If this were the NFL, I'd say "improving your draft position". LaPorta didn't say that Shapiro "dresses like a pimp" or anything like that, did he? Otherwise, I can't explain it. LaPorta's continued presence in AAA ranks with casting Michael Caine in "Blame It On Rio" on the misallocation of resources scale. (Ken Funck)
