2010 Pint-sized Dominican lefty Fabio Castro is now on his fifth organization at age 25, having signed a minor-league deal with the Red Sox. A hard thrower, heís built for relief, but last year's reverse split as a starter complicates things.
2009 The player to be named later received for Matt Stairs, this little Latin lefty arrived too late to pitch for the Jays at any level. Prior to that, the Phillies were attempting to convert him to starting, an experiment the Jays continued to let run in the Dominican Winter League, but he didnít have much success in the role at either location. It's just as well; as a hard thrower who dominates lefies, Castro is best suited for relief work. Unfortunately for him, the Jays are already up to their maple leaves in lefties, particularly in the bullpen.
2008 Finally off the Rule 5 merry-go-round, Fabio Castro yo-yo'd between the majors and the minors last year. He's a little guy with big velocity who has LOOGY potential at the very least-in 52 plate appearances against him, big-league lefties have just three hits, all singles.
2007 Castro was a Rule 5 pick last year, taken from the White Sox by the Royals, immediately traded to the Rangers, and then traded in-season to the Phillies for a decent starting prospect, Daniel Haigwood. As so often happens with Rule 5 guys, any excuse for injury was taken to put him on the DL and send him to the minors on rehab for as long as possible. Featuring a low-90s fastball, a curve, and a slider, he pitched well when given a chance, holding lefties to 2 hits in 27 at bats and even getting a couple of shots at closing. Castro was a nifty pickup by Gillick and the sort of talent the Phillies should be making space for on an otherwise sparse 40-man roster.

2009-04-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)I know it's early but aren't the Jays shooting themselves in the foot by starting Brian Burres when they have Cecil, Mills and Fabio Castro waiting in the minors? I realize the first two aren't lighting the world on fire but does any major league team, let alone one that was in first, have any business giving Burres starts?
(Bill from Toronto)
Agreed 100 percent. If the Blue Jays are serious about making a run this year then they can't be messing around with guys like Brian Burress. Any of the other three would have been better choices, regardless of what they are doing at Las Vegas right now. (John Perrotto)
