2010-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think the A's will call up Michael Taylor any time soon? He had a poor first half and was hampered by injury. Has been on a nice little tear recently, though. Previous two seasons in the minors were excellent. I'd rather see him out there than Travis Buck....
(Clark Griswold from Inside a Christmas tree)
Kevin Goldstein knows far more than I do about the situation. Earlier this week, he said he'd be surprised if Taylor were up before September. I have nothing informative to add to that, except that with the A's seemingly out of it but now down Ryan Sweeney as well, it wouldn't hurt to take a bit of a longer look at him than September, with its distortions in terms of talent level, traditionally allows. (Jay Jaffe)

2009-07-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Travis Buck is playing for Sacramento because ____________.
(Billy Beane & Bob Geren from Oakland)
He has a .289 OBP since 2007 and makes Milton Bradley look like Cal Ripken Jr. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-04-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)In his rookie season, Travis Buck did pretty well in limited time. Then he struggled to open the 2008 season and got sent down to the minors. Toward the end of the year, he got called up and started to hit again. He kept on hitting in Spring Training, but now that we're in the regular season, he can't hit again. I know a lot of those are small sample sizes, but I thought Buck would have established himself as an average to slightly above average corner outfielder by this point. What's the problem?
(Dave from Chicago)
It's too early to react to him going 1-for-11 or whatever. The real problem is that the expectations for him are inflated by his 2007 half season, and that he's never been in the lineup long enough for anyone to get a real feel for his true level of ability. He jumped from Double-A to the majors, and in a half season of work hit far better than his translations would have suggested. He got off to a lousy start last year where injuries played a major part, and he spent a good amount of time in Triple-A before having a hot September cup of coffee. Overall he's at .262/.344/.450 for his career of just over 500 PA. If he can't sustain that, he's a fourth outfielder, and even if he can, that's only borderline useful. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-12-23 14:00:00 (link to chat)If the A's sign Jason Giambi, how would that impact Jack Cust, Daric Barton, and Travis Buck? Does Giambi play first with Barton going to the bench or minors? Does Giambi DH with Barton staying at first and then Cust moving to the outfield, thus displacing Buck, or does Cust go to the bench?
(Eric from Denver)
I think this potentially impacts Barton more than anybody, because while the A's don't see Cust as unplayable in the outfield, it seems more likely that he'll get more DH time than outfield play, and that means Giambi'd be playing a lot of first base. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-10-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who would you start in the A's outfield next year out of Travis Buck, Matt Murton, Ryan Sweeney, Carlos Gonzalez, and Aaron Cunningham?
(Dave from Chicago)
Good question. I'm not sure how crazy I am about any of 'em. Gonzalez has star potential but still needs lots of work, and he's the only one with real star potential. I'm not a big Murton or Sweeney fan. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-09-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)aaron cunningham, he produces, but doesnt wow anyone with the athleticism/tools. whats his upside? top 100 prospect?
(roy from seattle)
The best comp I've heard is a pre-struggles Travis Buck from the other side. That's a nice piece, but not an impact guy. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-08-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Will, thanks for your great work. To what extent do you think injuries will keep Andy LaRoche and Travis Buck from fulfilling their seemingly considerable potential? Buck especially can't seem to stay in one piece. Thanks again!
(Dennis from Monterey Park)
You have to take it into consideration with both. Health *is* a skill. (Will Carroll)
2008-08-15 15:00:00 (link to chat)Christina, What is your assessment of the A's going forward 2009 and beyond. I know a lot of people are bullish, but I have my worries. Unlike the Rays who were stacked with four and five star players, the A's seem to be almost overloaded with three star types - They must be pushing 20 of these guys. How good of a team can you have with a plethora of useful roleplayers and platoon partners? Is a team with no weaknesses, but no real strengths either a playoff contender? Matt
(lentzner from Fremont, CA)
I don't know why people would be all that bullish. It's an interesting and deep organization, but you're exactly right, and this is why I was so down on the Harden deal. Near-adequate corner outfield types or somebody who might be a third starter if things break right, but who's more certainly a four and five... you don't hoard those guys, you bundle them to *get* good things.

I see plenty of weaknesses. The infield lacks a single reliable regular under 30. The outfield has Carlos Gonzalez and... well, maybe Travis Buck pans out, but you can just as easily say the same of Daric Barton. The pitching staff has all sorts of depth, but nobody's an obvious ace in the making. I guess I see a lot of adequacy and a shot at 80 wins if a lot of things go right. (Christina Kahrl)
