2002 Davey turned in a surprisingly solid half-season of work before suffering a shoulder strain. He hit the DL in late July and never returned, eventually undergoing surgery. He isn’t likely to be ready to pitch by the start of the season, and as with all pitchers coming off shoulder surgery, he’ll need to be watched closely.
2001 A very solid audition by the big right-hander has the Padres hoping for good things in 2001. The problem? The audition lasted only 12 innings, and Tom Davey was up to his usual tricks with Tacoma and Las Vegas, walking hitters in bunches. The smart money is on someone else.
2000 A tall, flame-throwing right-hander, he fits the closer stereotype and is being groomed for that role. However, like most of his Seattle pen pals, Davey has little idea where the ball is going after it leaves his hand. The Mariner bullpen ranked last in the league, averaging 5.6 walks per nine innings. Yet inexplicably, the team keeps bringing in relievers with a history of control problems. Piniella believes that he can help them simply by screaming "Throw strikes!" but it seems likely that the notion has already crossed their minds.
1999 After moving into the bullpen, Davey had a good year, making the Double-A All-Star squad. The huge right-hander finally started to harness command of his four pitches-a plus fastball, forkball, curve and changeup--to generate one of those tasty power/groundball combos that I like. He was red-hot in the Arizona Fall League, so he figures to get a long look in camp.
