2016-01-14 20:00:00 (link to chat)Who are a couple of catcher sleepers to take late in 5x5 keeper league?
(LittleRon from WV)
Assuming a 15-team, one catcher mixer I like Wilson Ramos (people are suddenly shying away from him) and Robinson Chirinos. In a two catcher format, Geovany Soto and Jarrod Saltalamacchia are backups who could push their way into enough time to be better than the bottom end guys who are playing every day. (Mike Gianella)
2013-10-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can you give me a scouting report on Jarrod Saltalamacchia's hair?
(Christopher from Oakland)
#Perm (Jason Parks)
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)What conclusions can you draw from Jarrod Saltalamacchia hitting .259 with a BAPIP of .387?
(Alex from Boston )
He has a perm. (Jason Parks)
2013-03-06 20:00:00 (link to chat)I whiffed on catcher in my 10-team AL-only head-to-head league. Now I have to make a heroic decision between the likes of Chris Iannetta, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Jason Castro, and John Jaso. Your thoughts?
(Jim from Chicago)
I'd go with Jaso then Salty. Not too shabby. (Paul Singman)
2013-02-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)Can Saltalamacchia raise his OBP this year? Would you rather have Rob Brantley?
(Guy from TX)
It's hard to see a big leap in Jarrod Saltalamacchia's OBP given his incredibly high strikeout percentages. I'd still take Salty over Rob Brantly. We know what we'll get with Salty. Brantly - who I do like long-term - seems like a complete unknown. (Mike Gianella)
2012-08-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)With the breaking news of Kelly Shoppach signing with the Mets, is the East now the Mets' to lose?
(Garcia from LBC)
Well sure. They're just 16 1/2 out with 47 to go. It's anyone's division now.

Actually, this is a good deal for Boston. Shoppach wasn't the back up long term there. They have Ryan Lavarnway who needs playing time at catcher and this deal opens up a spot for him to get it. He could be the starter next season in Boston or split time equally with Jarrod Saltalamacchia (I spelled that all by myself!) which would make for pretty good production from the catcher's position.

As for what it does for the Mets? They're nine out of the Wild Card with a billion teams to jump over so I don't really get it. (Matthew Kory)
2011-03-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think the Red Sox Great Experiment with Jarrod Saltalamacchia will work? Phrased differently, looking into your crystal ball, who do you see catching for the Red Sox on August 1st? Thanks again for the chat, Christina.
(mattymatty2000 from Portland, OR)
I'm still a bit of a Salty skeptic in terms of his delivering on the same upside we might have expected of him a few years back, but the nice thing about Epstein finally harpooning (t)his white whale is that he's just another guy in Boston, easily receding into the background in a clubhouse chock-a-block with famous people and big expectations. Come August 1, the Sox will have cause to feel good about indulging themselves this quest to at long last get him. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hardest player name for you to spell?
(dianagramr from NYC)
I can spell Doug Mientkiewicz and Jarrod Saltalamacchia with the best of them, and I know my Derrek Lee, my Derrick Turnbow and my Derek Jeter, to say nothing of my Jarrod Washburn and my Jered Weaver and my Jaret Wright. I was a spelling bee champ in sixth grade, and also finished second in fourth and third in fifth.

The one that gets me is Mark Teahen. I ALWAYS spell it Teahan, and right now I just had to look again to see that I got it correct. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-03-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)Any big plans this weekend?
(Miguel Montero from PHX)
Well Miguel, it's funny you should ask, because I'm actually headed to Chi-town this weekend for the annual draft in the Strat-o-Matic league in which I partake, and it just so happens that with my 4th overall pick in the draft and my dire need for a catcher (thanks, Dioner Navarro and Jarrod Saltalamacchia, really!) you and Jorge Posada keep popping up as potential choices. (Eric Seidman)
2009-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)"Jays got more back than the Twins did for Johan Santana (it would be hard to do worse, I think)." As you note, that's setting the bar pretty low. Is that the worst trade of the last ten years? I can't think of any that are worse off the top of my head...
(mattymatty2000 from philly, pa)
Only time will tell, but I think you can make strong cases for the Expos' acquisition of Bartolo Colon (Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee and Brandon Phillips to Cleveland) and the Braves' acquisition of Mark Teixeira (Neftali Felix, Elvis Andrus, Jarrod Saltalamacchia - yeah, I can spell it without looking - et al). Still, it's in the picture for the clinkers of note. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-07-29 16:00:00 (link to chat)Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Vicente Padilla for Phil Hughes.
(X from Y)
The Yankees wouldn't include Hughes in a Johan Santana deal so .. (Will Carroll)
2008-03-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Jarrod Saltalamacchia will start the season in AAA. Considering the Rangers are rebuilding and Gerald Laird's performance as the team's #1 catcher last season, is there any upside to sending Salty to OKC?
(Mike from Fort Worth)
I don't mind the decision. Laird is a significantly better defensive player, and Saltalamacchia won't be helped by not playing every day. If Salty hits his way back to the roster, you can make a decision on Laird--including trading him--then.

Long term, I think Salty has to hit enough to play 1B or DH, because at least one of Ramirez or Teagarden will be a good hitter and much better catcher. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Where would Jarrod Saltalamacchia rank as a prospect if he were eligible?
(Or from Dallas )
I'm not a prospect guy, but it sounds to me like the Rangers are vastly disappointed in his defense so far. PECOTA hates it as well, projecting him for like about -13 runs a year. Given his height and that information, I think it's likely they move him off C sooner or later.

Gonna try moving back to the desktop machine. Fasten your seatbelts, kids... (Jay Jaffe)
2008-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you worry about rookies who struggle with plate discipline after a stellar minor league track record? Jarrod Saltalamacchia's impatience during his short major league stint has me wondering whether he's going to become the patient, walk-happy hitter people projected him to be.
(Or from Dallas)
I wouldn't worry about it. Salty's got the broad base of hitting skills that I don't think we're talking about a slider-speed bat here. With the investment of time I think every major leaguer has to make, he'll learn the league, the zones of the umps, and perform in a way consistent with what we should expect from him on a projected career arc.
